Personally, I think the debate about when "life" begins is irrelevant
to the discussion because both the egg and the sperm are alive in every
sense of the word. The issue for me is when does a human being arise
from the ball of cells that we call an embryo. Differentiation begins
when the blastocyst forms a rudimentary notochord/neural plate at about
two weeks gestation. Prior to this there is no organogenesis. If there
are no organs there is no person so I have absolutely no moral
objection to using these cells for research.
