Oh I'll block so some voices come in loud and clear and some can't be heard
at all!!! Wagner Fan
Dominic Cossa sang his first Met broadcast as Silvio in "Pagliacci".
The Canio was RIchard Tucker. Before the start of the performance,
Tucker came up to Cossa and said: "Is this your first broadcast, kid?
Many happy returns!" Tucker then told Dominic where to position
himself during his important moments, so that he would get the best
microphone exposure.
BTW, Dominic said Tucker's high B was the loudest note he ever heard
from a male singer!
Best,
Ken
Now this is a thread that warms my heart. It certainly beats the last
few posts of the former topic.
There are so many "nice Richard Tucker stories." More than any other
singer I know of. A few of them I witnessed, most I did not. But he
was always helpful to young singers and musicians, and would give
money to a kid walking with an instrument case, if the kid seemed down
on his luck. Tucker supported such as the Gigli family for years. He
also sent money regularly to Suliotis when she hit the depths in the
early 70's, and the family kept this up for years. The only
stipulation that Tucker had was that nobody was to know of this, and
nobody did until years after he passed away.
A real mensch was exactly what Tucker was. He was always supportive of
his colleagues, and was never self absorbed.
