Which really wasn't sufficient, either. Someone at the Met has
finally come to the unfortunate, but correct realization that selling
recorded music, particularly classical music, from a brick 'n' mortar
establishment, is a big loser in 2008. I haven't been to the Met gift
shop in about ten years, but I remember that whenever I did, there
were lots of people browsing, and no one buying CD's. And I suspect
that most people shopping there will see something on the shelf, note
the price, and then go home and buy it for half as much via some
online source. This has, of course, happened with lots of things
other than recorded classical music.

Here in scenic Boston, both HMV and Tower departed at around the same
time, perhaps five or so years ago. A local chain, Newbury Comics
(despite their name, they sell mostly music and DVD's), stepped into
the breach, figuring that they had no competition for classical music,
and since they had lots of stores, conveniently located both in Boston
and in the suburbs. I've spent some time at their "flagship"
classical department in downtown Boston, on Newbury Street. It's a
little cramped, but they do carry a pretty decent selection of music,
the prices are pretty reasonable, and they even sell used CD's cheek-
by-jowl with new product. And even when they're having a sale (they
often mail out coupons), I'm generally the only person shopping, and
always the only one buying. Most recently, they've stopped sending
out their weekly classical newsletter, and I suspect that this is
merely the first step toward getting out of the classical music
business. It's a shame, but it simply means that I'll be buying an
even larger percentage of my CD's from the comfort of my PC.

There are plenty of other things that they can sell at the Met. But
when it comes to recorded music, retail is dead.
