Actually, to give the Devil his do-do for a directorial excess that is
really excrement anyway, I suspect that the rational(ization) for the use of
the bees is that Baal (and these are the Priests of Baal in this scene,
remember) is related to Beelzebub (that is, by way of linguistic corruption,
Lord of the Flies), and typically the Lord of the Flies was indicated not in
terms of what we consider 'flies', but as something more akin to bees.
That's not for a moment to justify everything that's despicable about the
production (not only that scene, but the rest that's on You Tube that I
saw), but I suspect that it gives one a nugget of what might have started
out as the rationalization - much like Hillary's vote to enable our invasion
of Iraq, one might say.
I actually think the singing and conducting are equally bad - what possible
justification is there for all the ornamentation, particularly the upward
leaps, and listen to how amateurishly the orchestral conducting begins to
drag at about 3:15 into the scena.
This is why the Europeans are behind us in having outlawed the death
penalty.

The rocking chair with its back to the audience symbolizes
old-age reflecting upon its youthful bee-ing.
Hi REG,
Despite your rather bumbling thoughts and opinions which I largely
agree with, for once, you of course make the rather asinine comment
about capital punishment. You might want to consider who the US keeps
company with when it comes to executions: Iran, China, Saudi Arabia,
Vietnam, and Pakistan. Not the sort list one would normally want to
be bracketed with when it comes to jurisprudence is it?
We Europeans do of course understand why the US has capital
punishment... When you have a homicide rate that is equivalent to that
of a Third World Country, well the populace, the politicians, and the
media might be tired of the carnage and choose to vote for such
means. A pity in my view.
I guess you won't be joining Amnesty International anytime soon. I of
course will be writing to them on behalf of the audience who had to
sit through that performance of Nabucco.
As always....
Best regards

John.
You know that REG does not read your posts. I can tell you though,
that you often mistake his irony for his actual political opinions. I
have no idea where he stands on the death penalty (which I oppose) and
neither do you. It looks as though you just found an excuse for
another personal attack. I find it tiresome, pointless, and not up to
the high standard of discourse that you generally maintain. (when you
are not attacking REG!)
Best regards (really!)
Paul
P.S. One can almost trace the demise of Arsenal to the day you
suggested on this very board that one should watch them play to gain
an appreciation of the game...Hubris??
Paul
Hi Paul,
He does read my posts. And you can tell from his responses that he
would never have made it as a litigator, that much is evident don't
you think? And his grasps of the facts are at best tenuous. His
insults are frankly puerile in nature, and he accuses me of having a
'Very Little Brian', that is the only irony of his posts.
You do me a disservice Paul, I really would have responded to any
poster on the issue of capital punishment.
The objectionable thing about Mr Garmise is that he is clearly on the
'hard right' on almost issues, it would not surprise me if he opposes
gay marriage.
With respect to Arsenal, no matter where they finish in the
Premiership they play by far and away the most attractive football in
the league. After the departure of Henri I actually thought they
would have trouble qualifying for Europe this season, and to be honest
I placed a bet that Manchester United would retain the championship.
Hubris has nothing to do with it, Arsenal are often dismissed as
playing exhibition football without the grit to grind out the results
that ManU or Chelsea are capable of.
Best regards

But REG was not really addressing the issue of capital punishment. You
read his post too literally. He does not read your posts, but he does
read my responses to them!
I am delighted that there are three British clubs out of the 4
remaining for the European championship. Liverpool seems to play
their best football in this competition, don't they? I support
Chelsea, but would not be at all surprised to see Liverpool in the
final.
Yes, Arsenal when they were healthy, and complete did play
beautifully. (I get to see them about once a month on our "Soccer
station.") I have only seen Spurs once this season.
Paul
