its not the big moments that impress me with her but other large areas
of roles that others singers seem to take for granted and to which ?she
applies the most detailed consideration and care. For me its not really
worth arguing about since either you go along with her or you don't - its
the reason I don't compare Garbo to other actresses. They both had unique
qualities that effect audiences in ways other actresses and singers cannot
and thats the way it is. If you are not a member of that audience thats
OK -
but if you are, you know what I mean. Richard- Hide quoted text -

How many Lady Macbeths, Anna Bolenas, and Violettas did she preform?
Virginia Zeani has over 600 Violettas on record. What large area of
roles
are you reffering to? Or am I misunderstanding your intent as to a
single
phrase or aria?
David
Yes you misunderstand - the number of roles a singer performed really
doesn't mean much to me since it is no indicator of the qualities a singer
can bring to a role - it just means the singer sang the role a lot - thats
all. What I mean to say is that it is not in the supposed "Big Moments" that
Callas impresses me - in fact some times she disappoints. In the big moments
of a Puccini opera she doesn't have enough voice either large or warm enough
to dominate the orchestra. In Lucia she cannot hit high notes with a clarity
and steadiness that is necessary for the role. But what she does do, by the
most painstaking attention to note values, markings, ornamentation,
shadings, is to give meaning and point to countless passages we had learned
to disregard and didn't expect from a prima donna. I get more out of her
singing "Alfin son tua" in revealing the personality of Lucia than all of
Sutherlands high E flats. It almost not worth comparing since you are
getting to entirely different approaches to what is hopefully the same end..
I saw her live once when I was a youngster and remember almost every aspect
of the performance - its hard to explain the hold she can have on some
members of an audience but for me she did and still does on her recordings..
For me its not worth rehashing the Callas controversy after all this time -
there is absolutely nothing in the original post that hasn'tbeen said
thousands of times about her in the last fifty years. Overrated - well thats
an opinion - what is not is the fact she is still discussed so thoroughly
after all this time has gone by. Richard
Now I see your point. I remember the Master Class audio CD. She spent
a great deal of time on the Mi chiamano Mimi with the Soprano student.
It always stuck in my mind that here was someone so different in terms
of natural ability to understand every note, phrase, and dynamic on
the
pages of every score she lookled at. BTW if you didn't hear that
lesson
that is all they worked on the first three words for approximately 20
minutes. Now that was a teacher!
