It's not a case of getting paranoid. It's more a case of 'Are you registered with the Information Commissioner, and if not, who will pay the fine for non-registration?'.

I'm sick and tired of organisations online and offline asking for information which is neither necessary to their needs nor in compliance with law. So I make the choice of not giving information. In this case, that choice means one less member for your forum. I shrug and I expect you do too.

The fact that you happily accept false info proves that it isn't necessary. So why ask for it? Presumably because your site includes software from the outside the EU, so that information is being stored by a third party, outside the EU, without any disclosure of who is storing the info, which is in itself illegal.
