Bill, I take exception with your chracterization of my initial post

That's certainly your privilege, Mark.

for this reason:
Ed went out of his way to emphasize that tout le monde of the opera
world in New York was there. We are not strangers here (at RMO) and so
I thought it not unusual to ask where Charlie was, especially since
has been telling anyone who would listen how important he is to the
opera scene in New York and also because the honoree was also an old
Met standee.

Mark, with all due respect, I'm not buying it. The only reason to ask
such a question publicly was to embarass Charlie. That's also your
privilege, but I think that you make yourself look meanspirited and
vindictive. I don't deny that Charlie asks for a lot of what he gets,
and I've said so on any number of occasions, but it would be nice if
those who dislike his RMO persona could occasionally just look the
other way and not go out of their way to belittle him. I am certainly
not among Charlie's apologists, but I chose not to make such a
comment. In fact, Charlie's absence at the event did not even occur
to me until he posted.

Simple as that. Are we to pretend the past doesn't exist?

If RMO is every going to lift itself out of the swamp that it's in,
yes. It's one thing to respond to something that someone writes.
It's quite another to re-open old arguments and feuds at every
opportunity.
