Re: STRAIGHT!!!!!! GET OVER IT HANDELMAN, YOU HAVE A BANANA IN YOUR STUPID TIRED OLD EAR

Obviously no offense taken. I think that you are right, and I have said it
before, that it's frustrating to me that a lot of times I may ask Charlie
something on the group and he won't follow up. I'm not sure it really
matters to everyone that he won't, but I wish he would when I ask him, and
while he does so ocassionally, a lot of times he doesn't. I am not so quick
to assume that he doesn't know, because when I've spoken to him I don't hit
a brick wall, but for whatever reason he doesn't that often....he does do it
often enough that I know he can, but for whatever reasons, he doesn't.

I wouldn't say he was alone in that - there are lots of people who
specialize either in asking questions (which don't require follow ups) or
who limit themselves to mordent (not as a figure of ornamentation) comments,
but I can't deny what you are saying. It frustrates me sometimes, but it
doesn't annoy me. That's me, and my affection for Charlie and my respect for
what he does know. I don't expect it to be universally shared, and I do love
the phrase "set the hares running". Haven't thought of it for a while.
Probably more sophisticated than "digs a hole and then others jump in", but
perhaps not so different conceptually.

I am not in the least embarassed or ashamed of my fondness for Charlie (or
you, or many others), but I am embarassed that I wouldn't recognize
Snegourochka if it melted all over me, despite having a recording that I
haven't listened to in ages. I am also potentially embarassed that I am
missing the second Bolivar performances of Bartok and Shost to go to what
will be at best an indifferent Norma at the MET in about 20 minutes, which
is my clue to run.....

But let's see if I can at least remedy the Snegourochka this week. For that,
at least, I suspect you will forgive me.

Best
Richard

having
been driven out by Charlie - as opposed to being driven out by lots of
other
factors - I don't care at all. If I believed for a minute that Jim M
were
capable of making intelligent posts here, for example, it might make a
(tiny) difference, but that is, as the waitress said to Tom Cruise,
incredible. Charlie didn't stop you from making a perfectly fine post on
the
DC opera.

With respect REG there is another side to this. The original
Handelman posting on Emma Kirkby is a classic example. The original
post set the hare running and to which (stupidly probably) I and
others responded including Mark and you.

As you said it is an interesting issue. And it most definitely IS! As
you also said it became an interesting debate (and it IS) but do you
notice something?

Aside from the opening post Mr Handelman has contributed NOTHING to
the issues you, I and Mark are raising. Not a line.

He has absolutely nothing to say about the role of vibrato (or not) in
Renaissance music.

I would go further and say that when his forthright statements on
"music" (a generic term) are called to account in technical/historical
detail he is absolutely nowhere to be seen.

Is there a reason for this do you think?

It does not matter. I am listening to Stoyan Angelov's wonderful
direction of Snegurochka who, in his repertoire, should be better
known than Emma Kirkby. Unfortunately, at the time, he was Bulgarian
somewhat like Alexandria Milcheva who, I believe, was a once blown out
mezzo at the Met in that silly Saint-Saens Samson and His Girl stuff.

The important opening of the Spring Fairy covers pretty much the
reasonably to be expected mezzo range and she's the best part of 15
minutes into this piece before any other vocalist turns up.....and
then it's the chorus before she and they segue into King Frost.

I can take any number of "statements" (we all make them, I believe)
but I would expect to be challenged and to attempt to answer as best I
can as you and others do.

Any idea why Mr Handelman does not? You could, of course, let him
answer for himself but I doubt he will. Personally I think there is a
reason for this but I am willing to be persuaded otherwise and anyway
I've just got distracted from all this by the first entry of the
Spring Fairy's daughter about 22 minutes in.........

Some other time.
