The second volume of the Janacek was reviewed I think fairly recently (which
doesn't make sense unless it had an earlier US publication date, or it was
really in advance), and it's something I want to read. The thing that
fascinates me is that he had this incredible effloresence (?) or creativity
very late in his life - in fact, you might say that the last few years of
his life were more significant in terms of output than all that went before,
even with the couple of early achievements.
It is very unusual to have this kind of outpouring with any creative person,
across so many areas and for such a number of years. I don't think, as I've
said, that even love accounts for it - love can as well drain away, or
inspire only one work, perhaps. There are very few artists who've had this
kind of relatively sudden outburst so late after a relative dry spell, and
it's a fascinating area to think about, at least for me.

Finally, the UK company Testament are releasing a recording (2 CDs on
SBT 21416) of Verdi: I Vespri Siciliani with Callas, Kokolios-Bardi,
Mascherini, Christoff and Carmassi, the Firenze orchestra conducted by
Erich Kleiber. It is said to be the performance from March 26 1951.
Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
Apologies: that should read May 26 1951.
Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
