Re: Bryn Terfel cancels ROH's 'Ring Cycle'

There's simply no evidence that Mr. Terfel is doing this because of his
children. He's known he's had children probably since their birth, and
nothing's made a difference before last week, including his son having such
a terrible break of his finger the first time, and facing surgery for a
second resetting.

This is, if anything, about a marriage on the rocks, where the children seem
to be pawns, unfortunately, which is not a good thing for any child to be.
If Alan's comments about Mr. Terfel's plans for concertizing, DGG
recordings, and so on are in fact accurate, they suggest that this was quite
a while in the planning stage, which raises even worse questions about why
Covent Garden and its audiences were given such short shrift.

And let's be absolutely clear about all this "family first" claptrap.
The
kid had a broken finger. That is all. On a Richter scale less given to
hysterical self-pity and self-absorption, it wouldn't register at all.
Caball once walked out on Chicago when her young son had viral
meningitis.
That is understandable. It is a life-threatening illness. A BROKEN
FINGER,
for Christ's sake, is the merest small change of childhood trivia, and
for
the wife to throw a hissy fit is to reveal MUCH deeper tensions based
on
God-knows-what simmering marital dissatisfactions.- Hide quoted text -

Exactly but there again both of us are wasting our time in this
particular thread.

Children first, music a long way behind.

Kind regards,

Either way, it doesn't matter. The Opera House simply goes and finds
itself another Wotan.

One replacement Hagan (for the two dates) has turned it down on being
offered $6000 dollars per date.

It's simple. Forget Terfyl. He's out of it for whatever reason.

Opera is only tiny sliver of music making.

Move on!

Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
