Hi Ed-
There doesn't seem to be much mystery about this. It looks pretty
clear that Alvarez has decided that Hoffmann is no longer a congenial
role for him and is retiring it from his repertoire. The substitution
from Hoffmann to Jose indicates that Alvarez feels his voice is moving
in a more dramatic direction.
These kinds of announcements always make me a bit nervous. I hope Mr.
Alvarez's voice is only getting darker, not more unwieldy.
