Dave: Yes...thanks...it WAS Frank Miller. For the life of me I couldn't
remember his name...but do recall him a most charming man...and a great
musician.

Still,
Vincent Herseth and the viola first chair (a big, gentle man who also
worked
with Toscanini...but whose name escapes me at this moment) all told me
the
same thing. He was very difficult...but he was an incredible musician.
He
was a personal friend of Richard Strauss and even conducted the world
premiere of 'Die Frau ohne Schatten'. His CSO/Strauss recordings are yet
to
be bettered in my opinion.
I also remember the old story of a time when Toscanini blew-up at the
string
section during a rehearsal. When he broke his baton and threw it
down...one
of the violin section said 'fuck you'...to which Toscanini quickly
answered...'No, no...too late to apologize'! At least that's how I heard
it.

I think the violist may have been Carlton Cooley.
But I don't recall him as being with the CSO.
Could you have meant Frank Miller, principal cellist?
Reiner and Heifetz made terrific recordings of the Brahms and
Tchaikovsky violin concertos.
I think the Rubenstein / Reiner recordings of Rachmaninoff's Paganini
Rhapsody is one of the best recordings ever made of anything.
