Hey, hey, hey, you forgot "Out of my life"....kidding aside, how do you
think Europeans, as it were, react to a score like this. For me, I grew up
on this, and think that Carousel is not only the finest R&H score I can
think of, and I am guessing that Americans aren't snobs about the 'great'
musicals - in part because they are not only beautiful music, but somehow
encompass a notion of ourselves that we wanted to believe was true (the
Romantic Frontier), even if it wasn't. I think that Copland, btw, did the
same thing for us in terms of the great ballets.
So that's just a roundabout way of asking how you think these scores are
generally accepted by European audiences who have some exposure to opera.
Thanks

Neat cross-sticking:):) He would enjoy the finale of Beethoven
Symphony 8 I think.
There are some wonderful young players out there.
Kind regards,

Which is not, of course, to forget flamadiddles:):)

Not opera, of course, but shortly on the road with theatre reduction of
the wonderful score of Carousel (one percussion) and still working out
the layout for same (two triangles for a start), pair of timps, glock,
xylophone, one tubular bell, cymbal locations crucial particularly in
June is Bustin Out All Over.
Hey ho:):)
Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
Sadly not. Lovely triangle part in You are a Queer One Julie Jordan
(one bar after the horn cue) and also in When I Marry Mr Snow (Great
harp part in the latter, if anyone notices). And there is a wonderful
Segue in Mr Snow.........
Never mind. It's not opera. Probably not proper music either and, for
all I know, may attract crossover artists.
If I Loved You begins with a great horn call.
Oh, well never mind. Not proper music of course but glorious writing
for the orchestra and appreciated by same.
Hey ho!
Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
