Dear fellow opera lovers,
For nine years there has been a weekly Saturday opera chat organized and
hosted by various people in that time. In general, people who intend to
participate usually arrive anywhere
on Saturday from GMT 2000 to GMT 2100. I've been a happy member of this
group for two years. The current host is Lis Froding.
I selected the Lycos chat rooms as our current venue.
http://chat.lycos.co.uk/ offers free chatting and the
ability to create one's own chat room.
So we would be delighted if you can join us today. What do we talk
about?
Anything and everything, but I would say 80% of the discussion is about
opera or related topics. Many of us also swap impressions of any operatic
broadcasts or webcasts to which we are listening. Saturday is a
particularly good day for this since it is the heaviest day of operatic
broadcasts on the Web. The flavor of the group is also very diverse. Our
regular participants come from all over, New York, Alaska, England,
California, Italy, Sweden, Finland, etc. etc. It's an eclectic and
scintillating group, and I think you'll enjoy the experience.
Here are the directions to join our opera chat.
After you have gone through the registration process (fortunately a
one-time process), you may log into chat. At first, you are presented with
an ad (just a visual still, no animation or audio). A few seconds after
that ad pops up, two greyed-out buttons become available in the upper
right-hand corner. You want the one on the right, Chat Now.
At that point, a list of chat room categories appears. Select one of
the categories at random and enter a chat room. Once there, type /Goto La
Scala and you will be immediately taken to that room.
If you are informed that no such room is available yet then that almost
certainly means you are the first to arrive. In that case, you are
completely free at that point to go ahead and create the room yourself. On
the lower left of the
chat
window click the Private Cabin link. Once there, select Open Cabin. Then
replace the default name for the cabin with the words La Scala (you can't
use OPERA HOUSE unfortunately; Lycos doesn't allow a room to be created
using any words which have been used for room names in the past 48 hours.
Both the word "house" and "opera" are used a lot, the latter due to the
Internet browser).
That's it. The room is created and accessible to anyone who knows
about
the room and types /Goto La Scala.
An important technical note: Some of our Mac users have noted that the
only browser which appears to work reliably with the Lycos chat rooms is
Firefox. Furthermore Firefox actually only appears to work reliably in
these chat rooms on Macs with OS 10.2 or later loaded. So if you have a Mac
with an older operating system you're probably out of luck until you upgrade
to 10.2.
Happy chatting!
Cheers,
Charles
