My dear fellow passionate opera buffs,
I came across a cute little
paperback the other day which some of you might like to read. It is
entitled, "Tenors,Tantrums, and Trills," by David W.Barber( ISBN Number
is
0-920151-19-1,published by Sound and Vision at
www.soundandvision.com).
The author presents a series of opera
terms (with some illustrations) and defines them in a very humorous
manner, and I got a kick out of the publication, recommending it to you.
Here are some examples:
1. ENCORE: The repeat of a musical performance signifying
(a) appreciation or (b) that it should be done again until the singer
gets it right.
2. HELL: 1. A place of unending agony, torture and suffering
often used as an operatic plot device (in Don Giovanni,Faust,Orpheus in
the Underworld and many others.)
2. Anything by Wagner
3. PANG: 1. A tenor role in Puccini's Turandot.
2. A kind of stomach pain suffered by
singers,often attempting Puccini tenor roles.
4. OPERA LOVER: A person who believes that nothing
succeeds like excess.
I had a lot of fun reading this publication, one
of several in this series, such as "Love Lives of the Great Composers,"
or "I Wanna Be Sedated:Pop Music in the 70's.
Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charlie, working on his latest publication entitled
"How I was a
Standee at the Old Met and Lived to tell About It"
