We are wading into some very sensitive issues of national pride here, Dan. Occupying forces would always try to influence the occupied with their brand of culture. One side would call it educating, while the other side would call it indoctrinating. It is of course to everyone's advantage that the Japanese were to be Westernised so as not to be hostile towards the West and not to repeat their expansionist desires. Have you ever had the opportunity to talk to the Japanese themselves about what they thought of this mega venture in bringing Western opera into their country ?

fujiwara is and was a japanese opera company, never associated with the american occupiers and never dependent upon the good will of anybody but their own customers. mcarthur couldn't even spell opera, and i'll betcha a good danish smorgasbord that he never went near an opera performance. the sponsors of the many, many japanese tours of major western opera companies were nhk (tv network) and a batch of japanese companies (sony, mitsubishi, et.al.), none of whom lost money on the various visiting companies. you could have sold out every performance many times over. and my friends who went there on such visits said that the audiences were loud, vociferous and devoted, as much as any audience in new york, copenhagen or milano.

and by the way, is it western cultural imperialism that has turned yamaha and other brands into international competitors to the revered steinway, bosendorfer and other household brands of the west?
