Far From Heaven

I just watched this film, a character drama from a few years back that
was
(I believe) Elmer Bernstein's last score. It's a very wonderful score
indeed,
confirming that of the composers we lost in that short stretch back
then,
his was the most grievous loss.
I found the film very moving, with the forbidden love between Julianne
Moore
and Dennis Haysbert, which would have been enough for a lesser movie,
but also Dennis Quaid who is struggling with the discovery that he is
actually homosexual. The film's production design is exemplary as
well;
the filmmakers weren't out to just do a period piece but to actually
make
a movie in the style of 1950s melodramas but with a more honest eye on
the subject matter. The film's titles are even done in the style of
the movies
of that era, and Bernstein's highly melodic score is also a throwback,
but
a wonderful throwback indeed.
Yeah, good movie.
