Just list ONE. (because it is my question, so tough toe nails)

In my case, for the past 30 years, I have purchased only one popular
singer (I on't even listen to such radio stations, but the stuff still
sneaks into your life): Seal. His first release was much different
than his later and remains my favorite. A unique voice, lengthy
compositions, an interesting poetry to his lyrics abd even one 'quiet'
song that was the first thing to appeal to me as striking. 'Velvet'.

My tastes for contemporary singers lean in the jazz direction, and
(perhaps sadly) toward those singers singing what Jonathan Schwartz
refers to "the Great American Songbook"--sadly because songs of that
sophistication are rarely written anymore to my knowledge. They
certainly don't become hits. Who's left--Sondheim?
In any case, I enjoy (but do not generally collect recordings of) the
"cabaret singers" such as Jane Monheit, Maude Maggert. Diana Kral is a
bit dry for my taste (though she is a better than average pianist). Out
in left field, I can't help liking Leon Redbone, though he may push the
30 year envelope a bit. I'm sure there are others, and I'm sure you
mean singers who have come on the scene in the past 30 years, and not
those who were still performing in the last 30 years (which would
obviously open up a hugh additional number of names).

List ONE.

One that I liked who has performed in the past 30 years?
Sinatra--there's one. Others: Ella, Joe Williams, Etta James, Aretha
Franklin, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Judy Collins, Mel Torme, Roy
Orbison, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy LaMott, k.d. lang, Rosemary Clooney, Marvin
Gaye. All of these not only have great voices, but know their way with
a lyric. Not one has been on American Idol. ;-)

NO NO NO NO.

I was wondering if there was a popular singer today that anyone
indulged in..... I mean... I still do Brazil 66 (and shared it with
Gummybefore the end... and he much enjoyed the gorgeous voice of Lani
Hall).

I just figured Jon was a closet Britney Spears' fan.
