The Levine/Met Ring is indeed a good one. It has a somewhat
conservative visual bent, rendering the operas with naturalistic sets
and fairly tame characterizations - A good many skilled singing actors
are to be seen and heard.
If you're after something with a bit more mental meat on which to chew,
please consider tracking down the Patrice Chereau-directed 1976
Bayreuth Ring, conducted by Pierre Boulez. The costumes, sets and
stagings are thought-provoking in the manner in which they place
various historical eras and political concepts before the viewer, the
conducting is quite a bit livelier, and the cast a bit stronger as
actors - and a good deal better-looking.
