My GREATEST FILM SCORE varies a bit from day to day, with SPARTACUS
there most of the time but some other days BEN-HUR, GWTW and some
others sneaking in depending on mood. Strictly on the subjective
plain, the score that has always touched me most deeply is Bernstein's
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, so creating a new category I might nominate it
as the GREATEST SCORE EVER COMPOSED FOR A FILM DEPICTING CHILDHOOD.
Obviously it does not have (nor should it have) the complexity and
sophistication of a SPARTACUS, so it would not warrant a GREATEST EVER
COMPOSED nomination (though it could get an Honorable Mention in that
category).

Gummy, I also have the 3-disc SPARTACUS set. It's amazing how nicely
disc 3, which has the music that was once supposed to be released as
SPARTACUS Vol. 2, cleans up with just one pass through a hiss
reduction program! Some incredible music there underneath all that
hiss, including the after-battle sequence with chorus, the "mines"
music at the very beginning and before-and-after music that was
omitted from the "Gladiators Fight to the Death" sequence on the
original LP/CD release.
