I'm stuck with who I would like to see win acting and writing awards this
year. I very much like David Straitharn, also a fine under-recognized actor.
I was very surprised to see Hollywood label him as an unknown. He's been in
films since the early 1980's in many John Sayles films, also in some
Hollywood fluff such as Sneakers. So he's well known by me.

And by me. He's been a quality supporting actor in many films,
including THE FIRM (Tom Cruise's initially-imprisoned brother), THE
RIVER WILD (husband) and L. A. CONFIDENTIAL (the rich pimp, Pierce
Padgett). His performance as Ed Murrow in GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK
was remarkable in that his "style," while consistent with the terse
Murrow persona with which we are familiar, was never forced, always
natural and even witty in the off-air scenes. He captured the essence
of the man without sliding into caricature, not a mean feat for an
actor playing a well-known real person. Nobody talks about him really
winning the Oscar, but if he does, it is well-deserved either from a
"this performance" or "Hasn't he been great for a long time and never
got anything so we'll give it to him this time" standpoint. Whichever
way they're deciding things this time. And boy, I'd love to have a
buck for every cigarette smoked in theat film!

Although I liked Syriana, I did not feel that George Clooney was
anything special in the film. Good, as always, but no real acting
required in the part (IMO). Ditto GOOD NIGHT, good performance,
nothing special.
