*FOLK, COUNTRY & BLUES*

3.00 BLACK, CLINT Put Yourself In My Shoes 1990 RCA. // AMF: This
is the album that introduced me to country music...The stories Clint
Black tells are exceptional...Since my initial exposure I've gone on
to enjoy more a [trad] flavor (a la Dwight Yoakum) but I still return
to this stunning album several times a year. It has stood the test of
time, and is a true classic... Enjoy the word play, story telling, and
musical virtuosity on display... AMF: After the successful "Killin'
Time" album, Clint continues with another equally awesome album...The
album has produced two number one hits: "Where Are You Now" and
"Loving Blind". The latter has some of the best fiddle (violin)
arrangements ever put into a country album... CONDITION: NEAR MINT

*SOLD* BOGGUSS, SUZY Greatest Hits 1994 Liberty. // AMF: Suzy
Bogguss is one of the finest vocalists to arrive on the country music
scene... her style varies from traditional country to western swing,
to adult contemporary...she has one of the clearest voices since
Connie Smith. This...collection includes Suzy's finest songs:
Somewhere Between (written by Merle Haggard), Drive South (written by
John Hiatt), as well as...Someday Soon (written by Ian Tyson),
Outbound Plane (written by Nanci Griffith and Tom Russell), Heartache
(written by Lowell George and Ivan Ultz), Aces (written by Cheryl
Wheeler) and I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart (written by Patsy
Montana), more! CONDITION: LIKE NEW

*SOLD* BOTTLE ROCKETS, THE 24 Hours A Day 1997 Atlantic. // Record
company stamp on back cover of booklet // . AMG: If you don't
believe the Bottle Rockets are contenders for the title of world's
greatest rock & roll band, you should check out their 1994 release,
The Brooklyn Side, the decade's best rock & roll record...24 Hours a
Day isn't quite as good as The Brooklyn Side, but it's a remarkable
piece of work just the same...The four scruffy musicians from Festus,
Missouri, can sound like fading Grand Ole Opry stars on an understated
country song like "Dohack Joe," and they can sound like a Southern-
rock bar band on an overstated rocker like "Slo Toms." ...The quartet
plays with a sort of controlled anarchy, as if at any moment they
might leap into epiphany or fall apart altogether... lead singer/chief
songwriter Brian Henneman is so quick to laugh at his own protagonists
that the blue-collar romanticism of Mellencamp and Petty is boiled
away to reveal lives as they're actually lived. CONDITION: NEAR

*SOLD* CARPETBAGGERS, THE Country Miles Apart 1992 CLEAN-Twin/Tone.
[OUT OF PRINT.] WEB: The Carpetbaggers pride themselves on playing
a unique mix of covers and original country classics...chances are
good you'll be introduced to the more obscure songs by known and
unknown country musicians of the '50s and '60s...Their distinctive
trademark tenor vocals add character to their skillful, old-school
honky-tonk sound. Oftentimes, the harmonies created by Copley and
Magnuson are reminiscent of the Louvin Brothers... NO DEPRESSION:
Above all else, real music with integrity. Great-grandpa would be
proud. CONDITION: New, Sealed CD.

3.00 CASHMAN, TERRY Cooperstown (The Town Where Baseball Lives) 2000
Winthrop. // Terry Cashman was one-half of the 70s duo, Cashman
and West, who are especially known for producing Jim Croce's best
work. // QUOTES: "An original who has captured the spirit of
America in his songs about baseball" - Bob Costas NBC-TV // "Terry
is one of a kind. Nobody writes songs about our National Pastime like
him. Every time I hear "Cooperstown" it moves me" - Larry King
CNN // "When it comes to songs about baseball, Terry Cashman is
the Big Leagues" // - John "Boog" Powell // Includes his baseball
"hit" - Talkin' Baseball (Willie, Mickey & "The Duke"). CONDITION:

*SOLD* CHURCH, CLAUDIA Self Titled 1999 Reprise. OUT OF PRINT. //
Produced by Rodney Crowell. // COUNTRYREVIEW DOT COM: ...Once radio
listeners had heard her powerfully-striking and sincerely-felt vocals,
that was all it took for the little girl, whose stage was once hot
metal, to finally step up to the "big stage" ...The album, which was
produced by her husband, singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell, opens with
the single that swept country radio (and CMT) by storm, "What's The
Matter With You, Baby". Co-written by Beth Nielsen Chapman and Annie
Roboff...With only a few numbers that could be classified as ballads,
the entire album maintains a steady light-hearted rhythm, which had
been the former-model's intention... CONDITION: LIKE NEW - Record
company stamp on booklet.

2.50 ELMAN, PETER Durango Saloon 1990 Acorn. OUT OF PRINT. //
"...Elman is one of the better hammer dulcimer players
around..." // AMG: ...He has played with Roy Buchanan, Mike
Marshall, Darol Anger, Lacy J. Dalton, and others... // AMG REVIEW:
This distinctive collection of acoustic American music is a CD to
return to constantly. The diversity of the styles ranges from country
to folk to bluegrass to norteno, and on and on. Peter Elman's CD
includes the diverse talents of such musicians such as Darol Anger,
Flaco Jiminez, and John Blakeley joining his brother Tony Elman and
himself. Just give a listen to "Sunset Over New Orleans," turning over
to "The Last Cowboy." CONDITION: GOOD - CD has surface issues but
plays fine.

3.50 FISHER, ROBERT MORGAN Follow A Hunch 1996 Imperative. WEB
SITE: ...Songs like "Bonnie," "The Pistol," "Jaws Of The Angel," "
and "Six Steel Strings" (all off the "Follow A Hunch" album) bear the
signature of an accomplished raconteur. Robert uses humor to great
effect and has been favorably compared to fellow Texans Robert Earl
Keen, Guy Clark, Steve Earle and Junior Brown...Other artists have
taken note of Robert's narrative skills. He's collaborated on songs
with the late Dr. Timothy Leary and Tangible Records recording artist
Darryl Purpose... // QUOTES: "...Very satisfying country-flavored
folk. Fisher's gravelly vocal style lives on the same street as Jerry
Jeff Walker and Bill Morrissey. His songwriting ranges from simple yet
wryly humorous lyrics (ala John Prine), to the literary complexity of
'Devil Drives A Dodge,' and 'Alcohol' (I'm a stylus that is driven to
play the record of ambition...') ... a first rate songwriter ..." -

*SOLD* GREEN, PAT Wave on Wave 2003 Universal. // A variety of light
scratches keeps this from being Like New - plays just fine. //
"...The most unique track is "Elvis," with special guests Willie
Nelson and Ray Benson to name just a couple. Another guest star, Ray
Wylie Hubbard, appears on the haunting Barricades...." // AMZ: In
his home state, San Antonio-born, Waco-raised Pat Green fills arenas
and has the status of musical legend. Judging from Wave on Wave, his
second major label release, he'll soon be making waves elsewhere, too.
Green has an edgy, scuffed-up voice with passing similarity to Robert
Earl Keen... CONDITION: VERY GOOD

2.50 JEWELL, BUDDY Times Like These 2005 Columbia. // Holepunch in
bar code. // AMG: Country singer Buddy Jewell's meteoric rise
caused him to be tagged an "overnight sensation," but...by 1995 he
started a job as a demo singer and recorded over 4,000 songs by
writers who hoped to have their material cut by Nashville's
greatest....Buddy Jewell won the first Nashville Star competition in
2003, propelling him to a number one country album later that
year...on his 2005 follow-up, Times Like These, Jewell ...follows the
same blueprint he did on his eponymous first album,...heavy on ballads
and laid-back midtempo country-pop... CONDITION: NEW

7.50 LARGO Largo 1998 Mercury. // OUT OF PRINT. // In deluxe multi-
fold digipak. // "...Taj Mahal with his exuberant singing and
barking, Levon Helm with his soulful twang, Cyndi Lauper with her
intense yodelling, David Forman (and his alter ego Little Isidor sans
Inquisitors), Joan Osborne, Carole King, and the Chieftans contribute
in making this a very satisfyingmusical experience... // AMZ:
Largo's concept is a heady one: A song cycle based on Antonin Dvorak's
"New World Symphony," which was itself inspired by the Czech
composer's love for indigenous American music of the early 20th
century...Stylistically, the set ranges from the swamp-rock shuffle of
"Disorient Express" to the poignantly soaring power balladry of "An
Uncommon Love," with a real highlight coming via "Medallion" (which
transposes Springsteen-styled workingman's rock to the life of a
Pakistani immigrant cabbie). CONDITION: NEAR MINT

*SOLD* LARKIN, PATTY Perishable Fruit 1997 High Street. //
AMZ: ...Larkin, who was a Celtic and jazz guitarist before hitting
the folk-coffeehouse circuit, steps into the producer's slot for the
first time...To avoid the temptation of repeating herself, she set
herself a challenge--she would make the entire album only with voice
and stringed instruments, no drums or keyboards...The presence of so
many stringed-instrument parts creates a big space, but the absence of
keyboard chords and reverberating drums also opens up a lot of room
within that space. Larkin takes advantage of this room to sing in a
whispery, intimate voice...Larkin has a way with words...but it's her
ability to match these words with a new kind of country/folk/pop/
chamber music that makes this album so special... CONDITION: LIKE
NEW - holepunch in bar code.

*SOLD* LOHAN, SINEAD No Mermaid 1998 Interscope. BORDERS: A
fascinating mix of country vibes, electronic layers and new-school
alternative energy...a one-of-a-kind album... // Dirty Linen
(6-7/99, p.69) - "...one of the finest releases of the past year....
AMZ: Sinead Lohan discounts any Irish or folk influences in her
music, but they remain a propulsive force...Her tunes have the
immediate simplicity of folk anthems, but her quixotic lyrics delve
deeply...Weaned on Top of the Pops, Sting, and Paul Weller rather than
jigs and reels, Lohan never sacrifices originality and character...a
swirling, textured backdrop of funky folk and electronica perfectly
compliments her wryly personal observations... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

3.50 NATASHA Natasha 1991 Chesky. // AMG: Chesky Records was best
known for jazz and classical in the early 1990s, but the New York
label dabbled in New Orleans-influenced R&B, roots-rock and blues with
this little-known CD by singer Natasha Turner (who simply went by
Natasha). This isn't strictly a blues album -- most of the tunes don't
have a 12-bar blues structure -- but because it's so rootsy and down-
home, it ended up being placed in blues bins. And, to be sure, you'll
find a lot of blues feeling on such earthy offerings as "Open Up the
Door," "Wrong Kind of Man" (which Natasha wrote herself), and the Doc
Pomus/Dr. John compositions "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do,"
"Nightbird" and "The Night Is a Hunter." Although its New Orleans
influence is hard to miss, this CD was recorded in New York -- not the
Crescent City -- and was produced by Chesky Records founder David
Chesky... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

*SOLD* POE, DAVID Love Is Red 2005 DP. // AMF: That description may
be a tad dramatic, but it's a good summary of this guy Poe's music.
Lyrically he comes from the wry sardonic tradition of Richard Thompson
and Warren Zevon, but musically the sound also draws from David
Sylvian and Morphine with touches of Nick Drake (a blend that's
perfectly suited to his velvety voice). Wrap all those influences into
a smoky/mellow acoustic brew that remains intelligent and avoids
sounding derivative, serve chilled with a tasteful cham-PAN-ya, and
you've got Love Is Red. This disc is missing the fun & laughs of a
live DP show, but otherwise it's got the same warm intimate feeling
down pat.. and it's his finest album yet. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

PICKS OF THE WEEK

6.50 KINKS, THE Something Else 1990 Reprise. // AMZ: Some fans
argue that this 1967 release is one of head Kink Ray Davies's middle-
period masterpieces (coming between two LPs that no kultist can deny:
Face to Face and Village Green Preservation Society), while others
regard it as an uneven collection of great singles and inconsequential
filler; a stopgap move. Although no one could argue that it's as
consistent as those classics, Something Else does boast one of the
great one-two punches in rock history: the rumbling tale of social
envy, "David Watts," and "Death of a Clown," a slurring pub sing-along
warbled by brother Dave. Elsewhere, the quartet dives headfirst into
droning psychedelia ("Lazy Old Sun"), whimsical balladry ("Afternoon
Tea"), suburban soap opera ("Two Sisters"--love that harpsichord), and
one of the most poignant singles in rock history ("Waterloo Sunset").

5.50 WRIGHT, CHARLES (of the 103st Rhythm Band) Sings The Blues: High
Maintainance Woman 2004 MWM Records. // AMG: Charles Wright headed
one of the great funk groups of the late '60s and early '70s, the
Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. // WEB: Returning to his
Mississippi roots, Charles Wright recently recorded his first Blues CD
entitled, High Maintenance Woman. Since his father never allowed him
to listen to the Blues in his formative years, Charles rarely heard
Blues music while he was growing up. He had his first affair with the
genre as a teenager listening to the Hunter Han*** radio show, and
became totally fascinated by the music. To his misfortune, the Blues
was in the process of being phased, out by urban radio, so instead of
embarking upon a career as such, Wright sat out to create his own
brand of funky music. He is presently concentrating on High
Maintenance Woman, which imparts his usual "Played by Human Beings,
Not Machines" slogan. Fans will undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised
by the talent displayed on, his first Blues CD, for he sings with the
flair of a veteran Blues man, who has yet to relinquish his Southern
credentials. The CD is a perfect illustration of how well rounded an
entertainer Charles Wright is with or without his band. CONDITION:

3.50 ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS VHS With David Bowie, Patsy Kensit, Ray Davies
etc. 1986 Cannon/HBO Video. -- AMZ: ...an...often stunning attempt
at revitalizing the movie musical with postmodern sensibilities.
Director Julien Temple was making his first foray into dramatic
features...and he upped the stakes by harnessing his visual ingenuity
to a period piece exploring London's social transformation at the edge
of the '60s...This is post-World War II London turning the corner from
economic austerity, giddy with jazz and early rock, yet to witness the
Beatles and the Stones...In wrestling with such valiant ambitions,
Temple and his young cast establish the film's musical soul in a canny
synthesis of '80s English pop with postwar bop and the seeds of Mod
culture. Onscreen performances by Fine Young Cannibals, Sade, and
Kensit, a Bowie production number ("Motivation") that cribs from Busby
Berkeley, and a wonderful sequence with the Kinks' Ray Davies as
Arthur (a likely nod to his own band's 1969 rock opera) are all well
realized...an extended single-camera journey through Soho set to
Charles Mingus's joyous "Boogie Stop Shuffle" that is itself reason
enough to see this brave musical. // Media mail sh/h for this VHS
is $3.50. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

a spherical delight of humor and grandeur...Barenaked Ladies mold
blushing harmonies with loopy guitar hooks - Maroon is simply
charming... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

With the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow standing in, on
Stephens' recommendation, for the uninterested Hummel and the deceased
Bell, the foursome run through a collection mostly drawn from #1
Record and Radio City. Chilton's in good voice throughout, the blend
of sweetness and melancholia of the band's original days present and
fine as ever. As a band, the quartet don't let the legacy down a whit,
from "Don't Lie to Me" and its full passion to the bemused regret of
"September Gurls." ... Todd Rundgren's "***" closes out the set with
a final appropriate blast...a great show from a legendary group.

3.00 CAPTAIN & TENNILLE, THE Dream 1978 / 2005 R2 Music. // Includes
original cardboard slipcover. // The single from DREAM "You Never
Done It Like That" put Captain & Tennille back in the top 10 with yet
another Neil Sedaka tune. This fine, yet somewhat overlooked pop-music
treasure was Toni & Daryl's last LP for A&M Records. The set also
includes "You Need A Woman Tonight" and the Beach Boys-inspired tunes
"I'm On My Way" and "Back To the Island." This recording sounds better
than ever digitally remastered on CD for the first time. Yet another
reminder of the pop-perfection this couple was capable of producing.
DREAM boasts deluxe packaging with new 2005 liner notes by Toni
Tennille. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

2.50 DADA El Subliminoso 1996 Capitol. // Record company stamp
on booklet. // AMF: DADA expands their sound and their songwriting
subject matter in this, their 3rd full-length release. Killer riffs
and hooks galore (I especially love Joie's bass intro on "You Won't
Know Me"), plus some interesting 'storytelling'-type songs to
complement the more standard DADA fare, are what you'll happily find
on this album. Some of the lyric writing ('I Get High' and 'Rise')
falls a bit short of the stratospheric standard set on their first two
CD's, but even those songs are still plenty good overall, due to the
band's utterly amazing chops. (And other songs here are some of the
best Michael and company have written to date!) Compared to their
first two, this one might take a little 'grow time' for ya, but
there's still no mistaking "El Subliminoso" for anything other than
another killer DADA album! CONDITION: LIKE NEW

stage favourites from Nigel *** the guy who directs videos for

2.50 EVERCLEAR Songs From An American Movie 1 (radio copy) 2000
Capitol. // Radio copy in cardboard picture sleeve with song list on
back cover. // BORDERS: The album opens on a country note with the
short, soft ballad title track, before kicking into a zippy, hip-hop
flavored "Here We Go Again," replete with Chuck D samples. "AM Radio"
uses Jean Knight's 1971 classic "Mr. Big Stuff" to back an infectious
exploration of late night radio listening long before the advent of
MTV, followed by an almost breakbeat-meets-Celtic folk re-working of
Van Morrison's classic "Brown-Eyed Girl." "Unemployed Boyfriend" and
leadoff single "Wonderful," reminiscent in both flavor and theme to SO
MUCH FOR THE AFTERGLOW's "Father of Mine," are closest to Everclear's
traditional sound, while "Otis Redding," a sweet, retro power ballad,
stands out as one of the most sincere and sublimely lovely songs the
band has created. SONGS FOR AN AMERICAN MOVIE, VOL. 1 finds Everclear
experimenting as much as ever with satisfying results. CONDITION: VG

gospel, and jazz, Ferrell paints some splendid portraits here...Best
is the funky "Satisfied," an amalgam of everything Individuality (Can
I Be Me?) sets out to be. A breakthrough album from a behind-the-

accommodate her and her voice, not vice versa. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

3.00 FROGPOND Safe Ride Home 1999 C2 Records/ Columbia. CMJ REVIEW:
Frogpond's second album follows up its Art Alexakis-produced debut,
Count To Ten. Like that record, Safe Ride Home is a consistent,
emotive and potent string of power-pop songs. The band, led by
vocalist Heidi Phillips, churns out one infectious hook after another,
without ever sounding trite or shallow... CONDITION: New, Sealed CD.

5.50 JOHNSTON, FREEDY Can You Fly? 1992 Bar/None -- AMG: To
finance this album, Freedy, a gifted but struggling songwriter living
in N.Y.C., sold the family farm in Kansas he'd inherited from his
grandfather. Not many have given that much to their music, and you can
hear that fervid and passionate commitment on every song on this
wholly fantastic album. While it was a risk worth taking--Can You Fly
put Freedy on the musical map--the sense of loss and even betrayal
haunts the album... // AMG: A giant step forward from his likeable
but ragged debut, Freedy Johnston's Can You Fly is a stunningly
accomplished and coherent album that recalls the raw lyricism of such
quintessentially American writers as Raymond Carver and Richard
Hugo... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

2.50 JONES, HOWARD In The Running 1992 Elektra. OUT OF PRINT. //
AMG: Howard Jones was one of the defining figures of mid-'80s synth-
pop. Jones' music merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave
with the cheery optimism of hippies and late-'60s pop... // AMF:
A couple of his hits, Lift Me Up, Tears To Tell, and City Song, are
found on this album. The Voices Are Back reminds me of the Men At Work
song Who Can It Be Now? Exodus wonders what it would be like to live
on another planet because we ruined this one. It's a great album and a
great introduction to the music of Howard Jones besides his greatest
hits album. CONDITION: VG

in full makeup and with their original lineup, 1997 proved to be the
perfect time to revisit the band's rich history of fist-pounding pop-
metal and sweeping power balladry. Greatest Kiss hits all the
highlights of a career that by this time spanned a quarter
century--"Deuce," "Strutter," "Rock and Roll All Night," "Do You Love
Me," "Beth," and "Calling Dr. Love." A few curiosities appear as well,
such as "Sure Know Something" and "I Was Made for Lovin' You" (they're
far more disco-oriented than you might remember) and a newly recorded
version of "Shout It Out Loud" taken from their 1996 tour. Clocking in
at 16 tracks, it's a comprehensive hits collection. CONDITION: VG+

Orchestrated pop hasn't been much in vogue since the late '60s when

2.50 P.M DAWN Jesus Wept 1995 Island. OUT OF PRINT. AMG: Jesus
Wept is, in fact, not all that different from the heady potion of
English psychedelic synth pop, east coast new jack sway, and new age
metaphysics the group brewed on 1993's The Bliss Album...?, only it's
much more that way. ...While the Beastie Boys, head increasingly back
toward hard rock, P.M. Dawn continues its course into the outer space
of sonic gloss. Perhaps Jesus Wept, the duo's third album, relies on a
celestial combination of airy R&B and acoustic hippie pop...another
exquisite slice of P.M. Dawn's gourmet auditory pastries.

2.50 PAGE, MARTIN The House of Stone and Light 1994 Mercury. AMG
REVIEW: It's not every artist who, on his debut album, can get Phil
Collins to play drums and Robbie Robertson to play guitar, and who can
write a couple of songs with Bernie Taupin, Elton John's lyricist...
It is nearly a compendium of ... mainstream rock trends, from its
prominent percussion tracks to Page's throaty voice, which alternately
sounds like Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Robert Palmer, among other
British baritones...Martin Page scored another hit with the title
track of his debut album... CONDITION: Very Good.
*SOLD* PHAIR, LIZ Exile in Guyville 1993 Capitol. // AMG: Exile in
Guyville is shockingly assured and fully formed for a debut
album...its structure is, infamously, patterned after the Stones'
Exile on Main St., but not the song-by-song response Phair promoted it
as. (Just try to match the albums up: is the "blow-job queen" fantasy
of "Flower" really the answer to the painful elegy "Let It
Loose"?) ...There is as much hard rock as there are eerie solo piano
pieces, and there's everything in between from unadulterated power
pop, winking art rock, folk songs, and classic indie rock...At the
time, her gleefully profane, clever lyrics received endless attention
but, years later, what still astounds is the depth of the writing, how
her music matches her clear-eyed, vivid words, whether it's on the
self-loathing "F-ck and Run," the evocative mood piece "Stratford-on-
Guy," or the swaggering breakup anthem "6' 1"," or how she nails the
dissolution of a long-term relationship on "The Divorce Song." Each of
these 18 songs maintains this high level of quality, showcasing a
singer/songwriter of immense imagination, musically and lyrically. If
she never equaled this record, well, few could. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

2.50 PINKEYE D'GEKKO Dry Clothes For The Drowning 2004 Force MP.
[Eclectic band does several styles very well] AMF: ... It's not a
hard rock album, but it is a unique combination of different music
styles. "Riverboat Queen" is a twangy southern rocker that would do
Lynyrd Skynyrd proud. "God Bless You Baby" tones down the riffage for
some classic 12 bar blues. "Girls of Arkansas" keeps the style going,
but adds some great Check Berry style guitar playing. Shades of The
Alice Cooper Band (circa 1974) can be heard on the bass driven "Queen
of Fire", and Bob Dylan's influence can be heard on "See You
Again" ... CONDITION: Near Mint.

2.50 PLATINUM WEIRD (Dave Stewart) Make Believe 1974 / 2006
Interscope. // New band with female singer from the Eurhythmics'
Dave Stewart. // BURN MAG: ...Made both rich and famous by the...
Eurythmics, Stewart easily surpassed the Lennox years with his
Spiritual Cowboys project - except nobody was really listening. Years
later, he thus presents us with Platinum Weird...his songwriting
partner Kara DioGuardi is very dreamy and she now haunts my every
morning...Kara's voice won't leave me alone...Make Believe is a
fantastic album. If you like Stevie Nicks, you're in. If you're a fan
of bands such as the Violet Hour, you're in. It's got the phrase
seventies arena rock lurking at every turn. This shouldn't be
happening to me. I love Kiss and Coheed and Cambria. But it has
happened, which just goes to prove the one thing that I knew was the
purest truth all along. When songwriters with chemistry come together,
magic happens. CONDITION: LIKE NEW - holepunch in bar code.

the depth of the songs on this release and how ... different this is
than anything he has put out commercially. It is full of musicianship,
creativity and just ingenious writing...my favorites, though hard to
pick, are "5 Women" and "When the Lights Go Down". It is obvious who
the influences are on these cuts with their BB King and Miles Davis
flavor, but still 100% unique Prince. If you're a commercial Prince
fan, this may not be for you. But if you love GREAT jazzy/bluesy/pop
music all in one, this is a must have... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

little more than an overproduced, homogenized mess these days, it's
even more heartbreaking to realize that a band with such great hooks,
harmonies, and songwriting never got its due. The Reivers had it &
delivered -- jangly melodies, evocative lyrics, and the ability to
tell stories & evoke landscapes of memories with seeming ease...While
I consider this their single finest album, all four are well worth
getting. Most highly recommended! // AMG: ...Every single song on

2.50 RENEGADE SOUNDWAVE In Dub 1990 Elektra. OUT OF PRINT. AMG: In
Dub is a double album [single cd] featuring versions of several
previous tracks plus much new material recorded with the assistance of
Flood and Holger Hiller. Selections like "Thunder," "Transition" and
"Deadly" are skeletal echo-chamber rhythm tracks devoid of much melody
or effects, though "Holgertron" does sample the Dr. Who theme with
panache. AMF: Any fan of electronica, techno, and what have you
must listen to RSW. This album is a complete remix of their debut
effort. The beats are kiciking, the bass is thumping, and you
definitely get a groove on. Their sonic mindscapes and sub-sonic bass
grooves never cease to amaze me. WARNING: Their bass tones have blown
out party speakers and some say they sonically planned this. They are
well worth the listen. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

6.50 RICHMAN, JONATHAN Jonathan, Te Vas a Emocionar! 1994 Rounder.
AMG: ...entirely sung in Spanish, the record is a charmer,
transcending the language barrier with ease. Along with a few new
originals and a handful of traditional Mexican tunes, the album
primarily consists of loose Spanish reworkings of Richman favorites
- I, Jonathan's "You Can't Talk to the Dude" becomes "No Te Oye,"
for example... whatever the language, however, Richman remains his
earnest, wistful self - none of his personality gets lost in the
translation. AMF: I speak a vey minimal amount of spanish, yet
this happens to be my favorite Jonathan Richman solo album...When you
can't understand a word he is saying this subconsious reverie is
brought to the forefront. This is definitely his most intimate
album... CONDITION: LIKE NEW.

very impressive... // SKRATCH ZINE: ...Kevin Stevenson's Boston

Sugarplastic's debut is far more coy and complex than it lets on.
There's no doubting that the band is simply a cheeky pop trio (owing a
debt of arguable size to previous guitar pop ensembles like XTC), and
it does that incredibly well... // AMF: ...Knowing that Andy

debt to the Beach Boys is superficially obvious on the hot-rod tempo
of "Come to California" and the amusement-park flavor of "Make

Replacements comparisons out of the way. Saying they sound so much
like the Mats is not to dismiss TLA as pure mimicry; this is what a
band from Champaign, IL (not unlike Minneapolis) is going to sound
like. You can never really hang your hat on which Westerberg song
they've traced, which is a good thing - their 11 originals come from
their own vibe and the bright, dual guitar/vocal play of Jay Bennett

*SOLD* FURTADO, TONY Live Gypsy 2003 Dualtone. // AMG: Slide guitar
and banjo whiz Tony Furtado's fourth album in four years (for his
fourth label) is a perfect encapsulation of how his sound has grown.
Encompassing folk, blues, funk, and jazz, the disc kicks off with a
seven-minute jam on "False Hearted Lover" featuring Paul McCandless on
reeds (a recent addition to the American Gypsies)...It, like most of
these live performances of tunes taken predominantly from Furtado's
past two releases, leaves the studio versions in the dust. Furtado's
dusky vocals resonate with a successful combination of pathos and
intensity...Furtado ... tears it up on the jaw-dropping album-closing
banjo instrumental "Waiting for Guiteau," where he burns with fleet-
fingered jazz fusion intensity...Throughout its nearly 70-minute
playing time, Live Gypsy winds through enough twists and turns to
rivet the listener, even for those who aren't jam lovers or guitar

5.50 McCORKLE, SUSANNAH Easy To Love: The Songs Of Cole Porter 1996
Concord. // AMG: One of the finest interpreters of lyrics active
in the jazz world during the 1980s and '90s, Susannah McCorkle did not
improvise all that much, but she brought the proper emotional
intensity to the words she sang; a lyricist's dream...Tragically,
career disappointments exacerbated her chronic depression (a condition
she kept well-hidden), resulting in her suicide in May of 2001 in New
York City...Rather than distort or alter the words she interprets,
McCorkle (who has an immediately appealing and likable voice) brings
out the hidden beauty in the lyrics...Susannah McCorkle sings 14 songs
written by Cole Porter whose lyrics were among the most sophisticated
of the 1930-1960 era. The arrangements by her musical director and
pianist Allen Farnham are quite inventive, with exuberant octet
numbers (featuring concise but generally memorable solos from
trumpeter Randy Sandke, alto Chris Potter, trombonist Robert Trowers,
and Ken Peplowski on tenor and clarinet) alternating with more
intimate performances including voice-guitar duets with Howard
Alden... CONDITION: VG+

Symphony Orchestra. The story opens as a grandfather (Lloyd Bridges)
hosts his daughter (Kirstie Alley) and grandson (Ross Malinger from
Sleepless in Seattle) during a visit to his country cottage. After
lunch, the trio settles in as grandfather recounts "The Story" of
Peter's adventures with a bird, cat, and dizzy duck on the outskirts

music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's "Smells
Like Teen Spirit," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and Aphex Twin's "Flim"
with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals...Ethan Iverson
uses the entire range of his piano with speed and dexterity; David
King's drum fills are deftly placed...bassist Reid Anderson somehow
keeps up with the madness and maintains a steady beat. Amidst all the
fun is a dynamic record that holds your attention. A wonderful

percussive arrangements. The Arabian-inspired "A Perfect Evening for
Flying Carpets" has a hypnotic, trance-like effect, while "The Spell"
lends a seductive note to the album. Intricate compositions like "Time

appropriate that the new-look trio should revisit it here, and a fine
job they make of it as well...Overseen by Keith Porter and co-produced

2.50 MARSH, TINA The Heaven Line 1994 CreOp Muse Records.
ALLABOUTJAZZ DOT COM: Tina Marsh, leader of the Texas-based Creative
Opportunity Orchestra (CO2) is a case in point. Her arrangements and
compositions are tamer than Sam River's Rivbea Big Band without being
as stiff and didactic as Wynton Marsalis' LCJO. This characterizes the
overall sound. Touted as "cutting edge mainstream", I prefer to
consider her music as progressive big band, a kind of marriage between
the avant-garde and postmodern classical... CONDITION: New, Sealed
CD.

2.50 NOA Calling 1996 Geffen. // iMUSIC: ...a pop songwriter of
Yemenite descent who sings in English...In pursuing her outspoken
muse, Noa has created a uniquely Israeli-American music...She has been
influenced by quintessentially American singer-songwriter Paul Simon
and the Broadway stage, but she is also known for playing the
Darbukkah, a hand-held Arabic drum...With Calling, Noa... seamlessly
fuses East and West ...Calling is a darker album than "Noa," heavier
and more intense. And though Noa's voice retains its often
breathtaking purity, a certain world-weariness has crept in; along
with the vulnerability is a toughness.... The record has its lighter
moments, but its vantage point is likely to unsettle... CONDITION:

3.00 RUGRATS GO WILD Movie Soundtrack 2003 Hollywood Records. //
AMG: A cross between two of Nickelodeon's most popular cartoons,
Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys... Along with songs by the characters
in the movie -- including Bruce Willis and Chrissie Hynde, who play
Spike and Siri, a pair of jungle cats -- the album features an
eclectic array of funk, punk, and rock, including George Clinton's
"Atomic Dog" and the Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go." ....Bruce
Willis' songs are more fun than they have any right to be,
particularly his duet with Hynde, "Big Bad Cat." Likewise, the
Rugrats' "It's a Jungle Out Here" is surprisingly enjoyable...

3.50 SCHUUR, DIANE Music Is My Life 1999 Atlantic. // The CD has a
smorgasbord of light scratches but plays perfectly. // AMZ: ...With
label founder Ahmet Ertegun serving as one of the album's three
producers, Schuur applies her powerful, free-ranging voice to a mostly
quiet collection of familiar standards and a few lesser-known
selections well suited to Schuur's emotive interpretations. In a
romantic, late-night state of mind on most of the disc's 11 tracks,
Schuur sounds as though she's enjoying herself from start to finish.
She opens with playful vocalise on "Invitation" and concludes with a
dramatic a cappella version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," where one
moment her voice rattles windows, then seconds later shifts to a
whisper...the blues, gospel, and R&B influences found in earlier works
are not as evident in this, a more subdued, seductive, and
consistently charming collection. CONDITION: GOOD

7.50 SHERMAN, DARYL I'm A Dreamer, Aren't We All 1998 Baldwin St. //
Recorded in 1983. // AMG: Jazz vocalist Daryl Sherman -- in spite
of her masculine name, a woman noted for her lovely, feather-light
voice -- first surfaced in 1988 as part of the group Mr. Tram
Associates, lending her singing as well as her piano skills to the
album Getting Some Fun Out of Life...A superior swing singer and
pianist, Daryl Sherman is heard on her earliest recordings as a leader
on this CD reissue. The original 11 selections, recorded in 1983, are
augmented by a previously unreleased version of "It's Bad for Me" and
three numbers from 1981 that have never been out before. The latter
has Sherman joined by cornetist Richard Sudhalter, pianist Mike Renzi,
bassist Jay Leonhart, and drummer Fred Stoll, while the later dates
feature Sherman accompanied by Renzi on six songs, Dave McKenna's
piano on five, and her own playing on "Take Love Easy." The highlights
include "You're a Lucky Guy," two versions of "On a Slow Boat to
China," "When Day Is Done," and "Isn't It a Pity." Every Daryl Sherman
recording is easily recommended to fans of the idiom, and this early
effort is no exception. CONDITION: LIKE NEW

*SOLD* STONECOAT Native Tongue 1999 Earthtone. // OUT OF PRINT. //
AMG: Stonecoat is the brainchild of producer Dino Soldo, a musician
equally influenced by Native American music and Stan Getz. Native
Trance, however, focuses on the former, fusing it with electronic
beats and atmospheres for a contemporary, new age sound that draws
from ancient sources. // AMF: ...Although bearing *some*
resemblences to Douglas Spotted Eagle this is very contemporary
instrumental music ... CONDITION: VG+

3.00 SUNSHINE, RON and FULL SWING Straight Up! 1998 Daddy-O Records.
AMG: One of the finest retro-swing bands to emerge in the '90s, Ron
Sunshine and Full Swing gained a small following playing a '40s-like
combination of jump blues, jive and small-group swing...On Straight
Up, Ron Sunshine & Full Swing never sound corny...they tear into both
original songs and covers of such classics as Slim & Slam's "Hit That
Jive, Jack" and Charlie Shavers' "Undecided." ... CONDITION: LIKE NEW

2.50 THREE MO' TENORS Self Titled 2001 RCA. // "...Boisterous, bold,
and bountiful, Three Mo' Tenors is a modern classic...." // AMZ:
Inspired by the astoundingly popular The Three Tenors series, Broadway
director Marion J. Caffey conceived and directed Three Mo' Tenors,
bringing greater visibility to the classically trained African
American voice. Starring seasoned tenors Roderick Dixon, Thomas Young,
and Victor Trent Cook...in the styles of opera, Broadway, blues, jazz,
soul, spirituals, and gospel. The three virtuosos hit high C's with
clarity and brilliance; scat with grace and grit; belt, bend and hold
a note to beat the band. ... CONDITION: Very Good.

5.50 TURNEY, NORRIS Big Sweet N' Blue 1993 Mapleshade. // AMG:
Since there are not that many alumni of Duke Ellington's orchestra
active, it is surprising that altoist Norris Turney (who was with
Ellington from 1969-1973 and eventually replaced the unreplaceable
Johnny Hodges) has not been recorded all that extensively...his
Mapleshade debut is the 72-year-old's first session at the head of a
quartet and the music's obvious success is even more impressive when
one realizes that Turney had never played with the other musicians
(pianist Larry Willis, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Jimmy
Cobb) .... Norris Turney is a melodic swing player with a large tone
and, since the rhythm section is quite supportive and sympathetic,
these renditions of blues, ballads, and standards (including his own
"Checkered Hat" and three Ellington/Strayhorn pieces) came together
rather quickly. Highlights include the lengthy "Blues for Edward,"
"Blood Count," and "Come Sunday." CONDITION: VG+

3.50 WAVE AID 4 Various Artists AMG: This is the latest sizzling
sampler of favorite artists aired on the established WAVE-Radio
network...The artists include Ottmar Liebert, Bernward Koch, Exchange,
David Arkenstone, and some commercial successes like Basia, Peter
White and Gato Barbieri... // Also includes Vonda Shepard, David
Lanz, Celestial Navigations and Paul Sullivan. CONDITION: VG

2.50 WEISS, MORT (Quartet) The Four Of Us: Live at Steamers 2005 SMS
Jazz. // AMG: Clarinetist Mort Weiss has had an unusual career. He
played in the 1950s and then put away his clarinet for 40 years...In
2001 he came out of retirement and, amazingly enough, his technique
was still excellent. Since then, Weiss has recorded several CDs that
show off his bop-oriented style well. Although not quite as fluent as
Buddy DeFranco, Weiss plays in a similar style, and fast tempos do not
faze him. Teamed with Ron Eschete (who plays the seven-string guitar),
bassist Dave Carpenter, and drummer Roy McCurdy, Weiss digs into eight
standards, stretching out and never seeming to run out of ideas or
enthusiasm. This live set, from Fullerton's Steamers, is easily
recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans, particularly those who only
associate the clarinet with swing and Dixieland. CONDITION: VG

2.50 WILD MANGO Oba 1996 Marquee. OUT OF PRINT. AMF: ...a smooth
(but never bland) mixture of Brazilian, Cuban and Venezuelan music
overlaid with jazzy influences. The strong songwriting (mostly from
band members) gives Mango a chance to display their widely varied
musical skills. All members display exemplary musicianship. Highlights
in a very strong set are the opening track "Tempestaad" (music set to
an adaptation of Pablo Neruda's poem about a storm) and the almost-
subversive cover of the Bacharach/David classic "The Look of Love."

from 1980-1988, featuring cuts from most of his albums of this
period...Five of the tracks were recorded in the cathedral of St. John
the Divine in New York City, and three were recorded live in the
General Assembly of the United Nations on World Environment Day in
1984, including a fine version of "Icarus," the longtime favorite from
his repertoire. As usual Winter's soprano sax is supported by his
Consort, and augmented by the voices of dolphins, birds, and

noted in description), a stamp or sticker on the CD booklet (hopefully
noted in description), or other marks to indicate radio copy or

surface that don't interfere with the quality of the CD's sound. The
condition ratings that follow mostly are concerned with the playing
surface of the CD:

Like New - Either pristine or has markings so slight that only a
bright light will uncover them.
Near Mint - Very light marks or scratches might keep the CD from being
ranked "Like New."
Very Good - A broad category, but usually means it has visible marks
or scratches ranging from light moderate to moderately heavy, put
plays perfectly. Please ask if you are condition sensitive, thanks!
