Re: Filter

automatically filter out all cross-posted messages ?

You can't filter out cross-posted messages that come in on
RMMT. But with some software, you can elect to reply to only
RMMT rather than to multiple news groups where you're apt to
get all kinds of troll responses from other groups that are
foreign to us.

I agree with Robert. However, if you're stuck using OE to read newsgroups,
the answer to your question is "yes; it's pretty clunky but it can be done."
I say clunky because paradoxically you have to first subscribe to the
newsgroup you wish to filter out! That said, here's the procedure:

1) Subscribe to the offending group by choosing "Tools > Newsgroups...",
finding it on the big list that comes up, highlighting it, and clicking the
"Subscribe" button. Click "OK" to finish.

2) Now that newsgroup will show up in the list of groups on the left-hand
side the OE window. Right-click on the newsgroup name and choose
"Synchronization Settings > Don't Synchronize" from the pop-up menu. This
will keep all its other (non-r.m.m.t-crossposted) messages from downloading
and helps you avoid a lot of constant housekeeping.

3) Switch back to the r.m.m.t newsgroup, find one of those crossposted
messages and select it.

4) From the menu, click "Message > Create Rule from Message...". In the
popup dialog window, click in the box next to "Where message is on specified
newsgroup" (you might have to un-check other selections). When you check
the box, down below you'll see that the system is "building" your filter and
that the word "specified" is a link. Click on it and choose the crossposted
group from the popup list (this is why you have to subscribe to it first, so
it shows up here). Click "OK" and you'll be taken back to the New News Rule
dialog window. In the second set of options, put check marks next to
"Delete it" and "Mark it as read" (in the third box you'll see these options
added to the rule as you select them). Below all that you can optionally
name your rule something obvious like "crossposted messages". Click "OK"
and you're done.

After the fact you can always go back and modify or delete your rule by
going to the menu and clicking "Tools > Message Rules > News..." and doing
the appropriate action in the resulting dialog window.

Alternatively, as Robert pointed out, you can download a newsreader program
that has more flexible filtering. Xnews and Forte Free Agent seem to be
popular, but you can Google "free newsgroup reader" or peruse a
free-software site like www.tucows.com or www.versiontracker.com for more
choices. If you're willing to pay to get the *really* big guns, Forte also
offers a non-free version of Agent that has even more features and options;
I'm sure there are others as well.

Meanwhile, a Usenet group is what people make
it to be. Despite all the crap that's been going on, it's up
to every one of us to generate and respond to new or old
topics related to trumpet. There are no limits set as to the
number of topics that can be presented on RMMT on any given
day. It's all up to US to make RMMT the great news group it
once was.
