What is a player doing that makes beginners sound like they are choking
a dog, for want of a better
metaphor.
Unequal air blowing thru?
weak lips?
not enough air?

A combination of factors. Air utilization issues as you've mentioned is part
of it, but the primary stumbling block is that the embouchure and throat and
mouth cavity (also very important) hasn't been trained to form correctly yet
and you're likely still fumbling around to find the right spot to put the
mouthpiece, where the mouthpiece "nests" on the lip tissue when it's tensed
to form the embouchure. As a result, you get that airy, raspy, unfocused
sound you're referring to. Your chops are buzzing sort of, but it's not the
kind of buzz you need. You need to learn to form the reed, which is what the
emo

Playing trumpet is something of a tightrope walk. The difference between an
embouchure formation that works and one that doesn't can be very subtle.

Particularly in the lower register it doesn't really take a lot of strength
as such. If someone could magically instantly train your chops to form
correctly the first time, you'd be able to play with good tone and a lot of
range.

If you're able to get a sound from low C to G on the staff, concentrate on
the mouth/throat formation. If you're sound is bad, try opening your mouth a
hair. The throat and mouth cavity need to be formed just so and also the
opening of the teeth needs to be right. When you get what sounds like a good
sound, be aware of all these issues as well as the angle of the horn.

thank you. I figured it would be a lot of things that have to work
together to get a sound.
sounds like a project for the weekend. As you said, I was moving
around, trying to get my
lips in the correct place, just like I do with my sax mouthpiece. I was
able to get the lower
register notes easier than others....Guess I'll wait a bit before I
tackle Gospel John...
