The mic-in of what? From what output of your soundcard?

Hi.

I was thinking that you could run a 3.5mm stereo plug from the sound
out on the sound card (where you plug your speakers in) to the mic-in
on the soundcard (where you plug a microphone into your computer). I
assume that that is how you record sound into reaper (from the mic-
in). Then any sound created by my computer would automatically go
straight back into my computer and I would be able to record with
Reaper.

I will read the docs and the web page like you suggest. I haven't had
time to do so yet.

You suggested buying a sound-card. What benefit will that have for
me? Do you have any suggestions on what to buy? Does it work like a
3D card, where it takes the processing power from the CPU and uses the
card instead?

I recently looked at my grandmother's old computer (the one I am
planning to use) and noticed that the sound card is built into the
motherboard. (obviously a very crappy sound card).

Thanks for your patiences!

I think we're talking at cross purposes here.

To me, as a long time synth and sampler user, a "sample" means something
very specific and the ability to play said sample a very specific process.

You will PROBABLY be able to hook your keyboard into the computer with the
MIDI interface and play the PCM samples that are generated by the General
MIDI synthesizer that is available onboard on most consumer "soundcards".
This is a very simple set of sounds and its MIDI capabilities are very
limited.

I have no idea exactly how you would record this set back into Reaper with
the soundcard you will have.

A used M-Audio FastTrack USB audio interface is up on e-bay for $34.00 right
now. You might be able to get such a deal at some point in the future.
