i just recently bought theyamahars7000 with the impression (from
reading its stats) that it would be able to receive a midi data
trasfer from a keyboard. iwantto send certain sounds from a keyboard
to my rs7k. so that i can take the rs7k anywhere and plug it up to my
m-audio keyboard and play the sounds from another keyboard that i just
sent to the rs7000.
Most keyboards will allow MIDI data transfer via system exclusive (sysex).
Here's the problem, the data has to be for that make, and model.
What certain sounds are you trying to send from a keyboard? (would help if
we knew what keyboard too)
It would appear the RS7000 has sampling capability, so you could always
sample the sound directly from the keyboard in question.
In fact looking atYamaha'sown site, it would appear the unit is purely
sample based. There is a AWM based tone generator too (ROM samples).
It would also appear to have been discontinued. Can you send us the link to
show what ' stats' you read?
so iwantto have like a portable version of the best sounds from
different keyboards to take anywhere i play. so im using the rs7k as
an external midi sequencer that i can receive a midi dump from a
keyboard. this is what i would like to be able to do.
The on board MIDI sequencer 'might' be able to record MIDI data dumps from
external MIDI devices, but it will not be able then to use it for it self.
Once the data is recorded, what is it backed up to, a disk-drive,
hard-drive, memory card?
I've aYamahaMDF-2 data drive, a simple unit that records MIDI system
exclusive data, then stores the information direct to a 3.5" floppy disk
(remember them?).
It was designed to back-up the data stored within the MIDI device, be it a
effect processor, drum machine, or synth.
It could playback sequencer files too, but only as type '0' Standard MIDI
Files (SMF).
When you wished to upload the data back, you selected the file, if the
device needed to be prepared for a sysex dump you set it up, and then is was
just a case of hit play on the MDF-2.
i have looked in my manual and looked everywhere on the internet to
find out how to do this. i have read that different keyboards can send/
sounds to an external sequencer, which is ayamahars7000, right?
InYamaha'sown words, it's a "MUSIC PRODUCTION STUDIO - Integrated Sampling
Sequencer"
The magic word being 'Sampling' - chopping up loops, and phrases.
i dont know if i am suppose to use the import button, the load button,
the save button or what... to prepare the rs7k for a midi dump. how do
i get it to receive sounds that i send via midi from another
keyboard???
I think you've bought the wrong device for you application...
A plain simple MIDI sequencer 'might' do this, but again, all you will able
to do is save it to disk, you wouldn't then be able to save it to anything
else other that the device the data came from.
Your 'sequencer' is a sample based remix production suite, it has MIDI, it
could be a simple MIDI based sequencer as described above, it may even be
able to record sysex.
please, PLEASE help me with this problem!! is theyamahars7000
capable of receiving a midi dump or should i look into some other
equipment for what i am trying to do? if so, how do i do this ???
Read up on the manual with regards to whether or not the on board sequencer
can record sysex data.
It will however not be able to use that data to generate those 'sounds'
internally.
For example:
I have a Roland D-50. I can dump all it's sounds as a sysex dump.
I have a Korg wavestation, I send the data to it, nothing happens, it's from
a different manufacturer, and not designed for that unit.
I have a Roland JV-2080, is I play the D-50's sysex data into the 2080.
Nothing happens, even though it's made by Roland. The 2080 ignores the
information as it knows the data wasn't designed for it.
I have a Roland D-110, same family as a D-50, so it should work right?
Wrong, it doesn't, it knows it wasn't designed for it.
I have a Roland S-750 sampler, if I play the data into it, guess what..
you've guessed nothing happens, it knows it wasn't designed for it.
Now if I had a Roland D-550, and sent the data (after telling the 550 to
expect a data transfer) it would work, why, because the 550 is a D-50 in a
box without a keyboard.
Now if you could invent a tone module, or synthesiser that could read any
sysex data, from any manufacturer, any model, and then play it as it would
have originally sounded. You would be a millionaire!
(sounds just the sort of thing Native Instruments would do)
BTW - the MIDI standard will also allow samples to be transferred by MIDI,
but boy is it
Ssssssssssssssllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Sorry to bring you the bad news..
well, have i learned so much in just one discussion. i so very much
appreciate everyone's sage advice. i now understand the capabilities
and limitations of this device as well as an understanding for midi
dump, external sequencers, sysex, etc. i have another question...
so if i really like a sound from a keyboard, [lets say theyamahas90]
how can i put one in the rs7k? sampling i figured.
hows the best way to go about this. with the proper connections,
[which im not sure of past the fact of using the scsi connector] could
i buy samples from a keyboard and put them on my g4 and then upload
them into theyamahars7ooo? if so, how can i go about that?
i use absynth 4 just for now as a basic beginners and have live
ableton and logic i mess around with. how do i send samples that are
already in my apple, and send them into the hardrive/memory of the
rs7k?
also, can i make play a sample through the input signal of theyamaha
rs7k? like recording voices and such. i believe i can if i have heard
right. could i just hook up the s90's output into the rs7k's input and
hold a note and record that sound and edit it? will i lose alot of its
pureness of the s90 or will it work ok...?
i have too many questions, and i apologize for waisting your time, so
dont think you have to answer everyone right away... [go ahead, he
needs help]
but i have an axiom 61key m-audio keyboard that i use, and i have
finally understood the concept of midi data and sysex. i have to
program the keyboard and everyknob to do what iwantthrough a program
called enigma. i have different presets for differnet equipment. i
have so much fun playing around with all my equipment and iwantto
learn so much more. i just turned 20 and am trying to keep up with the
game. i love using the kaoss pad with my sounds as well.
so, the main reason for getting theyamahars7000, besides all the
amazing features it has to offer, is to move samples i love to play
with on my keyboard to hardware, and allow my setup time with my band
to be quicker and still keep all the samples organized. i just need to
know if i invest into some nice samples, can i use them on the
hardrive of the rs7k and take this thing with me on the road?
!!!! sorry for the wrong wording in the previous text... "my main
reason for getting the rs7k is to move samples i love to play with on
my COMPUTER and move it to hardware"
.
