Yes, Yes.
I can have two different instruments on different strings and combine
two patches for each instrument and then control the blend with the GR33
foot pedal. If that was not enough, the midi out can send a different
channel out for each string, so I could control 6 more instruments from the
midi out if there is another synth to send to. Oh, and I can blend in the
electric guitar pickups thru the GR33 on top of all of this. Makes my head
spin! (must read the manual to use all these possibilities)
Be sure to check out the Axon Ax100 mkII that I sent a link to. (there
is a video demo listed on the right side of that page) This guitar synth
(13pin input ) can set up different instruments on different strings, on
different fretboard areas (like from the 1st to 6th fret, 7th to 12th, 13th
on up) and different picking areas (3 zones between bridge and neck) and
those picking zones can also control volume and expression. Hard to explain,
check out the video demo.

I have the Roland GR33 (bought used for half price) and I love it! I
think it is a more tactile way of playing a synth since you can do string
bends and hammer ons and pull offs. I used a Godin with RMC to drive the
GR33.
There's a LOT to recommend a guitar synth. Its substantially more
expressive and fluid in a manner that does indeed suit the elasticity of a
synth more than "mere" on/off switches. Why do ya think we keep seeing
things like Kaoss pads, controller strips and the Haaken Continuum crop
up? I've seen 3 guys really wring out a guitar synth and its enviable to a
lowly keyboardist like meself. Me so jealous, heh.
Also note that each string of the guitar can have different controller
and patch assignments if you like, just like zoning a keyboard. One player
I saw had orchestral strings & brass on the lower three, a synth lead on
top and some sort of pipe organ hybrid in the middle. It was jaw-dropping
to hear. By all means, explore that sucker. With 5 or 6 custom combis in a
GR33 rig, you could be a demigod. Unless you just play covers of old Bay
City Rollers hits. In that case, up yerz.
