Re: Are there any mixers optimised for keyboardists?

If you can find one then I'd suggest a FOSTEX DCM100 & MIXTAB. It's an 8
stereo/mono channel mixer. Effectively, it's a stereo mixer, but if you
only select the left channel input, the stereo channel becomes a dual-mono
channel. Each channel has Lo/Hi EQ, Pan & two (2) selectable effects send
(read: one FX send or the other). You can daisy-chain the DCM100's inputs &
they're midi controllable. In fact, the MIXTAB is just a midi-controller
for the DCM100. I set it up with the following channels;

1) PPG Wave 2.3 Channel 1 (mono input)
2) PPG Wave 2.3 Channel 2 (mono input)
3) Roland JX8P (Stereo)
4) Yamaha SY77 (Stereo 1)
5) Yamaha SY77 (Stereo 2)
6) SB AWE32 Soundcard (Stereo)
7) TB Maui Soundcard (Stereo)
8) Roland SPD6 drum pad

FX1) KORG DRV-3000
FX2) Creamware Tripledat card input

Stereo chain input) Creamware Tripledat card output

As the PPG is (essentially) a four voiced, dual-channel card, you can either
set it up as an 8 voice 'mono' synth, a 4 voice stereo synth, or two 4 voice
'mono' synths, it's useful to have the flexibility to change configurations
easily - hence each synth output going into an separate channel as a mono
input, then select the channel 'style' by using the PAN.

Mixer drawbacks:
1) Sometimes you get the 'zipper' effect, due to midi controller lag & the
127 controller levels (not quite smooth enough), but that only occurs if you
do lots of wild controller moves & dependant on the number of midi devices
you're controlling on the midi line.
2) 2-band EQ. It'd be nice if it had Low, Mid, Mid freq & Hi, but it's only
Low & Hi... :-/
3) Effects sends are all post-fader.
4) Effects sends are send-1, or send-2, not both.
5) I've noticed that the mixer requires a 'stable' powersupply. Brown-outs
or equipment like airconditioners on the same circuit can cause the mixer to
fade/distort for a few seconds. I think the capacitors may not but quite up
to par, but it's a simple solution - just don't put any high in-rush current
devices on the same circuit.
6) For it's day, the noise-floor was quite low (for the price) @ -76dB, so I
wouldn't use it as a recording mixer, but for on-stage it's fine!

I've had mine ten years. Sometimes the inputs don't seat correctly - that
may be the input jacks I'm using. The MIXTAB power input came lose, but
that was just a 5 minute solder job.

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a mixing console to use on stage as both my personal
monitor desk and also to reduce the number of channels I'm sending to
the main console.

Essentially I have 3 keyboards each sending a stereo pair which needs
to mix to a single stereo pair.

Then I have a stereo channel for loops, and finally a mono channel for
click.

Is there a mixer that's optimised for stereo inputs and sends. Also
should I be looking to use auxes or subs for my sends to the main
console?

Cheers for any advice,

HB.
