Strange MIDI problem

G'day people,
I am a filmmaker, -shorts, music clips and documentaries and currently
have a short to score somewhat urgently.
I have long had a wierd problem with sound specifically in my video
editing program.
Yesterday I needed to set up the midi system, (something I haven't done
for a very long time).
It took all day, but I finally succeeded in getting sound in (from a
keyboard) and out again, using a synthesisor which came on a magazine's
DVD.
(I know, cheap in, cheap out; but it did work, even if in it's own
idiosyncratic way, and the plan was to see if the system works first
before buying something a little more main-stream).
The name was "Muzys" by the way, and it came from the British "Computer
Music" mag.
But I digress.
The strangeness came in after a few minutes of playback, when suddenly
the program would decide not to play anymore. One track, 2 tracks, even
three would play back successfully, for a short while, then just quit.
An on-screen indicator showed clearly that events were still being
transmitted, but nothing was reaching the keyboard.
Closing and opening the program would give me another couple of minutes
of play, then that was it each time. A reboot had about the same
effect.
Now as my video-sound problem was similar, and quite specific, (I've
been living with it for years) I am now wondering if it is something to
do with memory and the soundcard.
(the soundcard is an earlier Audigy).
(RAM is 1 gb, and handles video just fine, with unbroken sound direct
from the video card).
The soundcard will also play eg music off CD or .wav files all day
long.
Has anyone heard of such a wierd occurrence?
I would be glad to hear about it.
Eric from Oz
(not sure of protocol here, so let me advise I have also posted this on
rec.music.compose)
.
