I am going to be moving to VA in a week and then a month after that
going up to school in Utah. I was wondering if it was better to
invest in a nice bag and carry it with me on the plane or just put it
in a box with lots of foam, etc... and ship it? The box will be
cheaper but I'm not sure about what heat will do to an accordion.
Anyways, just wanted some advice from you all on how to best approach
this problem.

Thanks

For me, what works is a box in a box in a box. Squeezebox is in a box,
padded 2" all around, and facing face down, to keep the bass section from
going under the keyboard. Also puts less strain on the bellows if you
place it face down. So then that box goes into another box, which is 2"
larger all around than the first box. Fill it with peanuts and put a layer
on the bottom before putting the first box inside. Cover the inner box
with peanuts (styrofoam or cornstarch type). Then tape the bloody bejesus
out of the seams and edges. Label the top with "THIS SIDE UP", "FRAGILE",
"GLASS" "DO NOT STACK".
I think that in the US, the delivery drivers are overworked (UPS, FedEX,
DHL, etc.) I can't imagine doing what they do all day every day. They're
always in a hurry, and things get stacked and things fall off the stacks.
It happens all the time. It's all about "hurry-up" over here. And so
people regularly get packages of kindling that used to be musical
instruments. Still, it's better than airline baggage handlers. Telescopes,
my other passion, are similarly distressed by shipping. They use a similar
technique. Squeezebox in a box in another box. Works for me.
Good luck.
