Re: Blocking messages in Google possible?

hi Ginny,

many ISP's also provide access to the USENET
newsgroups, and there are some specific benefits
to that type of access

since you then use a "variation" of e-mail type
software to access the messages, you can filter
in much the same way as you would Mail and Spam
and the "quote of the day" from dear Aunt Eileen

the difference being generally you don't recieve
the body of the messages, just the "header" and
other basic info. Your software then is filtering
which "headers" you see based on your criteria
as you configure it in your options settings.

many newsreaders can be configured to download
the bodies as well (for reading offline) or you
can select from the headers and download just
the bodies of interest to you after the filter
process has run.

in the olden days (lol) and in some places yet today,
access to the internet is costly, and bandwidth is at a
premium, so reading messages offline, crafting reply's,
then uploading at a later time was SOP

in practice, it is quite effective, as (and i apologise
to you all for this) my filters eliminate message headers
based on handles, addresses, and other narrow criteria so
actually i never see headers or bodies unless quoted in
someones reply to the filtered message, and then of course
it's a minor issue to ignore it, except when something warrants
a reverse look based on something like the boy's message
or other specific request by a third party.

not that it much matters, i far prefer to take the
brunt of things rather than the children and others
here be targeted... in my own way i have immunity
of a sort that is as efective as the filters :)

Ciao

Ventura

ps: usually you search your ISP's config area for
the news settings
similar to the mailhost.netzero.net or some such you will find
newshost.etc. etc. etc. or something similar

after your reader is configured on your PC, it will
download a list of all the newsgroups "spun" by your ISP.
This can take awhile... there are thousands and thousands

.
