Hi, WJD40!
Nice to read abut your work!
If you have time tell us more abut it!
Did you make any pictures along with the work process?
Did you make the bellows completely yourself?
To the bass configuration leaving away the 3rds is not new at all.
The old Schammel harmonikas had or have a very interesting bass
configuration. and it works also with 2 reed for each accompanying chord
button (tonic and 5th).
and by combinations off buttons one can play much more as one would think.
The keys are arranged different and each button is besonic even the
treble side is unisonic.
Bass key layout schrammel harmonika:
(keep in mind German B is Bb and German H is B.)
http://elektor.htl-leonding.ac.at/~jp/de/h/Kurze-Geschichte-der-Schrammelharmonika-Dateien/bass.jpe
Still it always was considered as limited, and playing technique is a
bit more complicated. The boxes are very light weight, and the sound is
very special. Faking chords also works with chord having all 3 notes, by
pressing two buttons at the same time, one fundamental bass with one
chord button, one ends up with a 7th minor chord, e.g. c major [c, e, g]
+ A fundamental = am7 [A, c, e, g]
In case of having the 3rds out you have to combined c, g with a, e [a,
c, e, g] Both are not real minor chords because this would be a, c, e
without the g. the system is always the same for all other m7 combinations,
minor fundamental A + major chord (major chord is a minor 3rd apart,
remember circle of 5th).
fm7 = F + ab major or f, c + ab, eb.
cm7 = C + eb major or c, g + eb, bb.
gm7 = G + bb major or g, d + bb, f.
dm7 = D + f major or d, a + f, c.
am7 = A + c major or a, e + c, g.
em7 = E + g major or e, b + g, d.
bm7 = B + d major or b, f# + d, a.
f#m7 = F# + a major or f#, c# + a, e.
…
Major drawback is it is harder to finger depending on the type of keyboard.
And then it will work better on instruments completely chromatic when
all notes are tuned to equal temper.
On diatonic instruments the chords are very often tuned to pure scale
intervals. This means the 3rd for major chords is lowered by abut 14
cent to get a very mellow chord sound, and the 3rd for minor chords is
increased in the height by abut 14 cent. (pure 3rds and pure 5ths)
Is all a question of taste, if one likes this mellow pure chords then
there is now way to fake cords. If one is more into chromatic type of
music, this is also a nice thing too, but bear in mind the sound is
different depending on the tuning. This is not a critic is just a bit of
contribution.
Still i hope to hear more abut your work, nice to have one her who is
doing this kind of work as i do, some exchange of experiences cold help
me too!
best regards, Johann
