Re: waveforms

<snip>
thanks for the info
all stuff to consider where to spend my rapidly diminishing savings
</snip>

So - did you manage to play in cubase and record in Audacity simultaneously? - that was the mission here ... it wasn't a shopping list.... or just "info" - I was asking you to try something that would cost you nothing - but
which make things easier for you....

It's convenient if you create two shortcuts on your desktop
.... As I recall, for XP and earlier (what OS are you using
by the way..??)

snvol32.exe

....will invoke the playback panel, whilst...

sndvol32.exe /r

....will give you the recording panel.....

Just leave these new shortcuts on your desktop for now...

In each panel you can mute, set faders, and on some SB cards there's an advanced dialogue for setting output to digital
(for now - don't set this to digital - unless of course you have a digital speaker-system... which expects digital signals)

Give it a go - just keep an eye out for smoke pouring out of your PC... you should never, ever let the smoke out! ......

*Just open any midi file and check that it actually plays
and makes instrument sounds... in what ever sequencer
you choose.... (if not - point the midi track to instruments in your SoundBlaster card) ... press stop.

*Then open Audacity, set the record-input to "What u-hear",
press record and minimise Audacity... maximise you sequencer app and press play

*Wait until the tune is finished

*Bring up audacity - press stop. Then edit as necessary - maybe fade in/out - snip out silence at beginning and end
and save as a wav file....

*Use any CD burning software to burn a track onto a CD

*Put CD in living room hifi - listen with critical ears.....

*Report back here...

PS

After that - I think you said somewhere that you have
an audiophile card knocking about.... you could consider
installing that as well as the SoundBlaster... You can
bridge them by simply connecting the headphone out
of the SoundBlaster - to the analogue ins of the audiophile
(you make need to make up a lead if the shops don't
have mini jack to 2x rca-phono).. (or you can connect
SoundBlaster digital out to audiophile spdif in and
synchronise the audiophile to "spdif input")

You would then send Audiophile analogue outputs to amp
and speakers, and adjust volumes levels in each card to
get a reasonable balance.. (using replay and record panels)

This setup would give you the most flexibility out of what
you have already bought. A DAW app should be able to
use asio drivers for the audiophile card and ignore the audio section of the SoundBlaster, whilst still being able to utilise the wavetable in the SoundBlaster card....

If you use this sort of set-up - In everyday use... you could still play midi files just by just double clicking on them.. and the final audio from any music file (and windows "sounds" )
would always come out of the audiophile card..

If you have any trouble with cubase... there are a few free
sequencer apps out there.....

* KRISTAL Audio Engine
http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php?section=download
( it's free for personal, educational and non-commercial use.
so you would need to ask about a commercial licence.. )

* TrakAxPC
http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/download/
( it's free for personal, educational and non-commercial use.
so you would need to ask about a commercial licence.. )

and then there's.....

* Audacity (audio recording/playback/editing)
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
(You may use it for any personal, commercial or educational purpose, including installing it on as many different computers as you wish. - it's "donationware")

After years of using Soundforge - I find Audacity awkward and very limited - but it records, edits and plays back - and it's free..

So - zero expenditure, but an overall step forward...
