Looks like I'll have to record about 50 versions and splice a 'master'
together.

Professionally, several takes of each phrase is done, and the better is
kept. The setup must not be changed in between.
But my advice is to make a whole take, as each emotion will fall in place
automatically. If it isn't good enough, make a second, a third etc. When
one take is correct (or wonderful!), use it, and possibly correct the
defects with the previous takes. A tenth should be enough.
