In my experience, if you want to make money from your music, there is
no room for 'sort of interested'. There are too many guys out there
who are mega interested! [grin!]
Most of the services that Danny refers to are simply vehicles to
flatter the guys who want to pretend to be in the 'real' music
industry ... much like the 'poetry collections' idea. Or writing an
autobigraphy and having it printed ... ends up as a few pallets lying
in the garage... unsold. I know a few guys who have done that.
Yes, Danny is absolutely correct, there are thousands who will provide
a service for you but it is good to understand that they are simply
interested in taking money from you ... not promoting your material
and making money for you.
I would suggest that you may be wrong in wanting to design the art
work yourself. This is a highly skilled art when it comes to a front
that will attract people and encourage them to buy. Likewise, the
'innards' of the sleeve have to be designed to Industry Standard to
make purchasers feel that you are a serious musical dude. It would be
unusual to find a professional set up that will accept artwork from
anybody other than a professional designer.
Likewise wanting to do 'everything' yourself may be a flawed idea. It
is certainly a flawed idea when it comes to credits ... especially on
the Net ... it shows immediately that it is a home based, home
produced product. In other words, it does nothing to promote the CD
as a fantastic, expensive, huge production that Net purchasers cannot
live without.
In the history of the music business there have been very few who have
pulled off the idea of 'doing everything themselves'.
As regards doing the footwork and selling into major stores ...
surprisingly, this can work. Most of the large stores have managers
who have a lot of say in what they stock ... they particularly like to
promote unknown material .... provided it is presented in a
professional, knowledgable way to them. Dirty fingernails and week on
jeans will not impress those managers ... but classy artwork,
advertising material ['future release'] presented by a cool looking,
trendy but expensively dressed, good looking guy [preferrably the
artist], with good communication skills, can work wonders.
I advised a local guy here in Eastbourne to approach those particular
stores ... he approached one ... they grabbed the idea ... he told
me .... I went in that afternoon to buy one ... they were sold out!
The manager said: "Do you know where we can contact this guy ... we
can shift tons of this CD" .... needless to say, the guy never went
back ... he suffered from the usual novice problem of not
understanding that at the beginning you have to create your own
success ... no one will do it for you. By the way, he had a stunning
front artwork and fabulous advertising.
Anyone who offers a service of distribution to an unknown artist will
simply see the size of their cheque book and take as much as they can
from it. Sad fact ... but true fact.
Do it yourself! Your job is to sell the first 20, 200, 2,000 ... then
the record company's job is to build that to 20,000. 200,000 ...
20Mill .... that is the way it works ....
