If I gave the impression that I was suggesting a student start with a
vintage model, that wasn't my intent and I apologize. I'm not suggesting
starting with a vintage model but with a new pro-model to limit the loss
value of the instrument if the student decides to discontinue studies.

Starting on a cheap horn can be detrimental to the learning process.
Most students start with a student model, and then upgrade when they
have become more advanced. But it is true that a professional model
probably will retain its second hand value better if it is properly
taken care of, so in case this student won't become the professional
sax player he and his parents expect, they will be able to sell the
horn and get a good part of the money back.
Whether a student, even one who has played clarinet for many years,
should start with a vintage model... I'm not sure. Part of me belives
that most vintage saxophones are more difficult to get the hang of
if you're a complete beginner, but perhaps it just a matter of how
motivated and skilled you are.
