Never too late Red - my Sax teacher's oldest student was in his seventies. I started playing Tenor in my 40s.
For Paul Desmond's sound, head for an Alto student model - maybe a YAS-275 from Yamaha. www.sax.co.uk rent these out so you can take one for a spin around the block before investing some money. And 500 pounds should be ample.
Scotland could be tricky for a teacher, but you'll need one.
Good luck

I'm 46 years young, been a professional guitarist for a couple of decades, now suddenly gripped with the notion that I need a saxophone. A couple of questions:
1. What problems might a 46-year old beginner experience, e.g. in terms of embouchure development, etc? Is it too late?
2. I want that breathy, mellow sound of Paul Desmond but on a budget of 500 UK pounds (I live in Scotland). What instrument would you recommend?
Cheers, Red
