Hello all
I tend to sightread a new piece using my flute and then then hitting
the keyboard.  Otherwise I sit in front of the keyboard with the new
piece and just stare at it, for some reason my brain doesnt see the
little guys on the paper as notes to be played unless I play them on
flute 1st.  Both my  piano  and carillon teacher both say that I
really need to not do that.  Last night I tried to sightread at the
keyboard.  After a half hour and realizing the boys were coming home,I
whipped out the flute, worked on the piece, and then hit the
keyboard.
The real irony of this is that I stopped playing flute years ago.   I
was just trying to figure out a way to find out how a piece should
sound.   I spent about a week rebuilding my chops and not messing with
the keyboard.  (oops)Needless to say my piano lesson that week was
wasted.
I will not be getting lessons for a while since I will be doing a show
for 5 weeks and I need to maximise what practice time so when I get
back in 6 weeks,I progress some.
Normally if I pull out the flute I spend about20 minutes on warming up
and tuning, then play the piece.  Or get distracted by the fact that I
have 2 Tull music books and start working on "My God."  By then its an
hour,I have 3 more bars of My God down, then my practice time is up.

I believe I told you this in another post -- The essence of sight
reading (playing from a score) is assimilating the graphical
representation of lines and spaces and seeing in your mind's eye the
corresponding keys on the piano. As the association improves over time
and by playing many different pieces, your fluency will develop. I
recommend you use cards and a radiating exercise (condensed excerpt
from my book) --

IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING TROUBLE
The amount of time it takes to master the notes from the cards varies
greatly, depending on the student. Some beginners are easily
overwhelmed by the task, and must begin with just a few notes around
Middle C, working their way out from there until they grasp the
notational system.

Within a few weeks, they can start working around High C and Low C, to
give them two other points of reference, advancing further from the Cs
as their ability improves.

Keep at it -- I often call it Working rather than Practicing.

HI Neil,

I can read music. Well treble anyway. At this point I am not
sweating the bass clef. I just write in the pitches otherwise I would
spend so long trying to remember what pitch is that. Thats not the
darn problem. The problem is associating the stuff with what I am
supposed to do wiht the black dots on the bars and spaces. As in
where I do I put the fingers. If I play it on the flute that seems to
make my brain say "oh this is what I am supposed to do. Otherwise I
just sit there and do nothing. I even tried again tonight. Got
nowhere.
I really apreciate your suggestions.
Cindy
