Somewhere around 500-600. Of course, we're not talking about current
pop tunes here - these are tunes going back the last century or so,
and
a good number of those were never "pop" songs.
How did you go about making this estimate?
Good question. Believe it or not, that's not really just an estimate,
at least not in the "picked a number out of the blue" sense you might
think. I actually have a list. I built this up by spending the better
part of two years going through all the songs I could think of, working
on playing them in different keys, adding songs to my repertoire,
working on playing them by ear, and so forth. The end result of all
that - aside from from a *huge* improvement in my skills - was a list of
all the tunes I had worked on as part of this process. And for a while
I was updating that list every time I learned a new tune. But I haven't
updated the list for the last few years, so it's a bit out of date.
I've learned a few new tunes, also probably forgotten a few that I had
learned only just barely well enough to make the list (and yes, it
didn't make the list unless I could play a solo piano arrangement from
memory) but I haven't played for a few years now. Of course, there are
also any number of tunes I can play from memory in a band situation if I
don't have to carry the melody, and any number of tunes I could probably
play by ear right now even though I've never played them before.
Anyhow, the list currently stands at between 400 and 500 songs (I can't
seem to get the tools I am using to give me an absolute count, but it's
four and a half printed pages, and the first page contains a little over
100 songs). And my "estimate" is that between new tunes I've learned,
tunes I've forgotten, tunes I'm OK with as long as I don't have to play
the melody, and tunes I am confident I could play by ear, there are at
least 100 more songs that I could reasonably say I know well enough to
count for this purpose.
I've posted the list before, but probably not to this newsgroup. Since
it always seems to be of interest to some, I'm posting it below.
But that brings up the question of what it means to "know" a song.
Anyone who can claim to know 600 songs probably didn't spend days
learning each one. I have "learned" most of the songs I know on the
gig. I'm betting Marc did too.
Many. Quite a few were learned at home, though. I'd go through all my
fakebooks and recordings to find as many different versions of a tune as
I could, and then spent some time learning the tune from those sources.
I'd learn half a dozen or so in one sitting that way, but I only did
that one a week or less. I spend the days between just playing through
the tunes I had learned in the last session - playing them in different
keys, in different styles, and working them into solo gigs. Still, I'm
sure it was no more than hour *per tune* on average.
In my case it's not about rote memorization. If it were I doubt I'd be
much good at it. I remember how to play a song mostly by remembering
what it sounds like. In fact, I "remember" how to play a song in much
the same way that I learn it in the first place, by ear.
This was probably the most eye (and ear) opening thing I learned during
those two years. Did we "memorize" Happy Birthday by rote as children?
No, we learned to sing it by ear. And we can learn to play it - and
many other songs - that way, too. If I know the song well enough to
sing it, I probably know it well enough to play it. That wasn't as true
in the beginning of my career as it is now, but by the time I became a
full-time professional, I certainly had at least some skill in this
area. I'm not saying this is an essential skill to have completely
nailed down before you can consider starting out as a professional, but
some level of this mastery of this skill it certainly is quite common
among professionals, which is why their expectations may seem
unreasonable to folks who lack this skill at all.
And unless you plan
on playing those same 40 songs night after night, that's really only a
bare minimum - better to have twice that many songs at least to select
from.
"Better", yes, but you'd be surprised at how many bands don't.
True enough. But note if a band is looking at a keyboardist who knows
only 30-40 songs, unless those are the exact 30-40 songs they play every
night, that keyboardist probably really isn't close to knowing enough
songs to work with that band. Of course, he can learn them on the job.
But if he doesn't know 30 songs yet and is flabbergasted that someone
might consider this a requirement, that suggests he probably isn't
really ready to learn that much new material that quickly.
