Help~!

I'm getting complaints from neighbors in the apartment complex I live in
about playing too loud. My landlord threatened to evict me.

I'm going to lock the soft peddle down, so that will help, but I was
wondering about any cheap sound proofing solutions that anyone as tried.

I have an upright grand, it is pretty tall, and I was thinking about
using
some of this eggcrate foam that is used a lot for the padding of cases.
Would putting a mattress behind the piano help? Also, there is no one
below me, just above me, and across the hall. The wall where the piano
is
rested is not adjoined to another apartment, it just separates my bedroom
from my living room.

Hello, and there's probably not a lot you can do to mitigate the sound
(except quit playing or get a digital with headphones). Your unit itself
can also act like a resonant cavity. Acoustic musical instruments are
just not compatible with thin-walled apartments and you are at the mercy
of your music loving/hating neighbors and landlord. Also, from what I've
observed. many apartment dwellers these days make no effort to meet their
neighbors (passing briefly by one another in the common area with "hi, how
ya doin'" doesn't count). Have you talked to them (preferably before the
first "offense")? If so, can you reach an agreement on day/time period
for piano practice? IOW, instead of waiting for your neighbors to react,
be proactive. Might just work. Manners can go a long way even in 2006.
And if you can mutually agree on a practice schedule make sure you abide
by it. Leave Sunday mornings quiet ;-) Sincerely,

Well, I locked the una corda pedal down (used a photographer's small light
stand, works like a charm, though a monopod would probably work, too.), and
I'm playing softer, so I tried it and had the neighbors listen, and they
said I'm fine. However, playing at the softness level I now have to do
greatly crimps my style, and no more big jazz runs and riffs, no dynamics,
just soft soft soft, which is better than nothing. I suppose, as much I
hate the idea, U will be resigned to getting a digital and playing through
headphones. Also, with the una corda pedal locked down, the tension is
much softer, so I'm worried that my hands and fingers might get weakened by
this. I tried a digital last night at a friend's house, a Korg with 88
weighted keys, and is it was terrible, no sympathetic vibes at all. The
neighbors are retired, and they are home a lot.
