Not sure what you're saying there. He's more than in the pocket and (as you
can see) he's not a "loop."
he's hitting the drums so hard that he's actually getting less sound from
them.<<<
Now that's a good theory. When you want your drummer to have less volume,
tell him to hit harder. "No -- harder man! -- we can still hear you!" I
think you're saying that drums are only going to go so loud and any effort
beyond that is wasted. At any rate, do those drums sound choked to you? No.
His sticks are bouncing off the heads just fine (more than fine) and those
babies are viiiiibbbbbbrating.
Technique-wise, you wouldn't use that much arm motion if you're doing a
four-hour gig; you want more wrist, more efficiency. But for a guest-shot on
one song, cut lose!!

Lesser drummers would find a good groove and stick with it the whole
song --
and that would work -- but Travis plays it seven different ways and,

7 different ways.. cut and paste and loop whichever section feels the
best and fits the song. one take... check please..
fyi.. it's a lot more difficult to stay in the pocket for 3+ minutes,
but that art is quickly fading thanks to modern recording techniques..
also fyi- i like travis barker and i'm an old fart. he plays well.
there is a law of dimnishing returns on volume though. he's hitting
the drums so hard that he's actually getting less sound from them.
but i don't really think he cares about that..
