Paul,
I reset the unit on the initial fire up to make sure I got factory
settings and not have to deal with anything that might have been user
changed. I then went through all 99 patches, hitting every pad in
each, to check the unit. That's how I found a few dead pads.
I have avoided the adversarial approach, but did tell him I wanted my
money back because I wasn't happy with the packing, some pads are
dead, and that I just don't trust it now.
I offered to eat the shipping back to him if he refunds. He responded
with:
"Ship it back, I'll then refund you and split the shipping. It was
working fine when I shipped it to you. I'll contact PO about
insurance and refund your shipping expenses if I get insurance for
it."
A minute later he writes "Please also read manual carefully to make
sure the pads are truly dead. The thing should be able to take a
beating, being that it is a drum kit."
I'm happy for the return opportunity, but I'm confused about his
shipping refund offer. He offers to split return shipping, and then
writes in the same sentence that the he will refund shipping if
insurance kicks in.
According to his post to me, it seems as though he feels his packing
was adequate because after all," ...it is a drum kit". Due to his lack
of packaging, and mentioning nothing of my situation, I checked with
another buyer of his, asking if he was satisfied with the packaging of
his item, and was he still satisfied with his purchase.
Although the buyer did give a positive feedback, he wrote that " I was
quite surprised to find a Pintech Dingbat jammed into a large Priority
envelope but it did arrive without damage."
So it seems to me that packaging is of no importance to him.
Now, do I ship it as received, or do I attempt to wrap it up a bit?
I'm leaning toward shipping it as received.
I'm shipping Mon. or Tues.

Here's a new one for me. I'm in the midwest and I bought a SPD20
from
a guy out east. After about a 3 wk. ordeal of trying to get it, it
arrived at the post office with, in addition to a hole ripped in
the
box, the wart prongs poking out of the top of the box. The postal
clerks said I should refuse the package and gave me the paperwork
for
an insurance claim. When I opened the box I found the SPD
*wrapped* in
2 paper grogery bags. Actually it was slipped into one bag half
way
and then slid into the second bag to complete the wrap. No bubble
wrap. No wadded up newspaper. No peanuts. Nothing but 2 friggin
grocery bags inside a thin cardboard box. ***, I bubble wrapped 2
POS
dead power tool batteries back to the factory. I haven't contacted
the
guy yet, but I don't want this thing. It doesn't appear to be
damaged,
but I don't trust anything about it. I fired it up here at home,
but
there are dead pads throughout the patches. What if this thing has
cracked boards or something I can't see? I'm not sure what working

some
help here. Thanks.

Did the ebay posting claim that it was in perfect working order? If
you feel mislead in any way, HOUND the guy about returning the POS
and
getting your money back. If nothing else, report the guy to ebay
and
give him a shitty feedback comment. I know that doesn't sound like
much, but I always check people's feedback comments before I buy
anything. Hopefully you didn't pay too much for the thing.
It really sucks that there are so many people like this on ebay.
I'm
pretty terrified of buying any used electronics off the bay... my
definition of "great" condition seems to be very different from most
'bayers. Good luck!
I'd suggest NOT going after the guy with the mindset that you'll be
giving him bad feedback already. Mike has already decided the guy
is
a dirtbag, when in reality the guy had 100% positive feedback and
his
only bad was poor/late shipping so far. Contact the guy and try to
work it out, be reasonable and simply ask him for a full refund and
you'll return the item.
Also - it sounds like you're not familiar with the layout of the
SPD-20? Some of the patches actually have some wierd set-ups and
might be missing sounds on the pads, possibly from changes the
original owner set up. If you really want to test it, set it back
to
factory defaults and then check the manual and play with it some to
determine if something *really* isn't working properly.
Good luck with it!
Paul
