Re: head selecton question

I'm sure the toms will be fine but if this is a typical C&W gig (ie:
not a Big and Rich/Toby Keith type of new country thing) then I would
be inclined to tune and treat the bass drum for a nice solid, thump
instead of an open, resonant sound. If the toms are too lively, try a
tiny bit of Moongel or gaffer tape and if that fails, try the gates
(always a last resort for me). I wouldn't invest in new heads just
for one gig.

There are two schools of thought here; one is to go in with "your"
sound and not alter a thing and the other is to tweak the kit (within
reason) to fit the gig. Guess which one will get you a call back?

I'm not even sure you'll need to port the front head. I would
start with a small bit of padding touching the back and front heads. A
thin pad that you can fold to fit the depth of the drum would work fine
and you can experiment with placement to get the right amount of punch
and sustain. I find that a bit more padding on the resonant head with
just a bit on the front head works fine and still sounds like a drum.

(Yeah, I know the purists out there will have a fit but screw 'em,
it's not their gig, is it?)

I've been asked, and have agreed, to cover for a drummer in a CW band next
weekend. I've been told that the gig's in a very large room (called
cavernous by some). The bar will supply a sound-man. I intend to go with a
GMS kit, with a 20" bd and smallish toms -- I don't expect any problems
that way. However, I've been told that my preferred heads wont do. I like
to use an unported and unmuffled bd (except for the thin factory installed
strip around the edge of the batter head), and I'm currently using G2s on
the toms. As well, I'm not a heavy hitter. Given the need to mic the kit,
a friend has recommend I use a ported bd head with some sort of pillowing
inside. He also suggested pinstripe heads on the toms. He claims these
will cut the sound better and make the sound man happy. I don't normally
play under these conditions so I can't evaluate his advice. What say you
guys? Thanks for any help given.
