There is a non-violent solution: cats hate certain smells, namely citric fruits. I bought a few litres of orange oil (zest distilled from peel) and spray that around the garden regularly. http://www.plantain.co.uk/oilsh-y.html It's cheap and smells nice to us -- but not to them! There's also ready made repellent products to buy that smell similar.
