Religion is responsible for most of the world's current problems.
It always has been.
Yeah, sure! Sex, lust, greed, hatred, envy, etc. etc. NEVER cause any
problems. RIght?
You guys wandering in the wilderness kill me! You don't seem to have
the brains to separate religion from dogma! It is dogma that is the
cause of problems because dogma requires an unthinking following. If
you want to find PROBLEMS just scan around for any area where people
are reacting with knee-jerk responses and the thinking part of the body
has been turned off! Yeah, politics is always a good place to start
looking!
If you are to understand religion, think of it as the owner's manual to
your car. Rob and others have a cow because they are fuming that "this
doesn't explain anything"! Well duh!
An owner's manual is NOT an engineering manual. An owner's manual just
say's things like be sure to keep oil in your engine to a certain level
or you'll end up in real trouble. It's not a treatise on automotive
lubrication theory! And the next thing you know someone has turned the
owner's manual into dogma! "The word of Gid says 'always keep your
motor full of oil' and pretty soon all manner of hideous perversions of
a simple rule of thumb are being forced on all car owners as an
ultimate truth! It's little wonder you guys are so confused! If you
want the ultimate truth then go looking for the engineering manual
rather than the owner's manual. But be warned, first you are going to
have to learn engineering BEFORE you can understand it!
On the other hand if you think the owner's manual is all hooey, and you
try to drive your engine without any oil, you are most likely going to
eventually end up very sorry.
Heard on npr (national public radio) yesterday: The recent/current drought
in Colorado/Utah (USA) has made officials in Las Vegas ('the' city in
Nevada) realize that without more water their current rate of growth cannot
be sustained beyond the year 2010. Their major source of water is the
Colorado River, and its contents, obviously limited, are already claimed in
full. Thus, they wish to tap into an aquifer in SW Utah that was found a
few years ago. Their argument rests on the fact that some of that aquifer's
drainage lies in Nevada. Thus, they feel they can simply drill down and
pump.
Utah has come to realize its peril. The assumption that the water is theirs
because it lies within the state has been questioned, and the need of the
neighbor has been described as greater than theirs. Now it's true that the
area atop that aquifer is sparsely populated, supporting only a light
farming industry, but the individuals living there are Mormons, and the
Mormons want the water for their own growth. They also have some problems
aiding and abetting the growth of LV in the first place. Thus a (court) war
is in the works. Given the environmental questions time becomes
significant, and tempers are rising.
This is the classic problem of resource allocation. Suppose it were to end
in war. How would one decide which heading to use to explain it? All of
the following apply; sex, lust, greed, hate, fear, power, & fun. Moreover,
it's not entirely clear as to whether it's a religious or a secular problem.
