Well I have a dilemma and would like some input from you guys...
I bought a Roland TD-20 kit from Guru about 16 months ago when I lived
in Florida. I couldn't play the Gretsch kit due to noise restrictions,
so the Rolands worked great. But now that we live in Wisconsin again
and have a basement, I set the Gretsch kit up on the Drum Frame and
can blast away without a problem. So the Roland kit has been packed up
and placed in storage--which seems like a shame.
Meanwhile, I am in the process of acquiring gear to build a home
recording studio. I am looking at some May drum mics, decent
overheads, hi-hat mic, and a board with good pre-amps (like the Mackie
Onyx). This stuff is going to cost about $4k give or take, and I am
considering just selling the TD-20 kit and using the proceeds for the
studio gear. I can't really see myself playing the Rolands again, but
you never know--I do plan on recording drums and doing some on-line
collabs, and you never know when they might come in handy.
I guess the only thing I can think of for certain is that I would
definitely use the TD-20 module for the purposes of MIDI-ing sounds
using Sonar as a controller. I really would like to be able to dabble
in the whole MIDI thing, but it seems somewhat wasteful to hang on to
a great Roland kit just to use the module for triggering sounds. A guy
could always pick up a less expensive module of some sort for
that--maybe a D4 or something.
I have looked on e-bay and the used Roland TD-20 kits are going for
$3500-4000 it seems, and mine is like new. I also added a couple extra
cymbals and an additional hard rubber trigger pad. I think the extra
gear would kick the value up a fair amount, but who knows?
So there it is--sell the Rolands and use the cash for studio GAS, or
keep them in the storage closet? It's not like I have to sell them to
buy the other gear, but I don't want to piss money away either. The
wife doesn't care either way (God she's a great chick!) but still, I
don't want to be wasteful.
Opinions please...
Thanks!

Dump the V-Drums. If you want sounds, get them from a Keyboard
Workstation that has more functionality. Roland keeps updating the
V-Drums, so the TD-20's will be worth less and less as time runs by.
