Re: Any advances in electronic snares?

I was under the impression (for whatever
reason) that the TD-20 module used sampled sounds.

Um, yes, and no. The TD -20 uses "modeled" sounds. I believe this
starts with an actual sample (rather than some electronically generated
synth sound) and then uses a digital filtering algorithm to "filter"
the original sound according to some "model". Of course some of the
base sounds could be synthesized as well. The end result is in one
sense cool in that you have adjustments that let you take any one drum
and change it's parameters; diameter, depth, tuning, heads, whatever.
but it's not a pure sampling system like say where you can put in
actual sounds of Lardo's drums or the like. A friend of mine has one,
but I'm still not that familiar with what it can do, but I'm guessing
that it probably also can do pure samples if you turn off the modeling.
I'm guessing that mode would be used for some non-drum sounds although
I believe cymbals are modeled too.

I think Roland has THE most responsive snare pad. It's pretty darn
impressive. You can bounce a stick on it and it will pick up the
tinyest bounces. I'm not totally up on the lastest (if there is one)
but the standard roland pads though impressive sensitivity-wise and
response wise, do still have a number of faults in my opinion. One is
the "hot" spot in the center of the snare from the sensing cone, and
the other is the "tennis racquet" feel of the mesh heads. I find the
bouncy mesh feel particularly annoying. But the mesh makes a much
quieter pad if that is an issue.

So I think there have been some advances in electronic snares but as
you sort of imply they aren't totally there yet.
