Han Bennink

I just recently watched a video of Han Bennink with Fred van Hove and
Peter Brotzmann from the '70s... awesome! Han was playing an
ancient-looking, 26" or 28" bass drum and using a Chinese tom as a
snare. He also had a China for a hi-hat top and the weirdest frigging
cymbal I've ever seen as his left-side ride. It had major chunks
taken out of the edge and the droopiest, most bowed profile I've ever
seen! It looked like a large old piece of cheese shaped into a
cymbal!
Fred van Hove and Peter Brotzmann are obviously brilliant, and Han is
a freak (he was also playing and jumping rope with some sort of tube
trumpet thing and the weirdest goddamn shaker I've ever seen? Not to
mention grunting into a timpani and setting a tiny cymbal on it), but
I really never got the full effect until I saw it all in action. Just
nuts.
