Okay all you wild inventors out there (Benj)! I've been thinking of ways to
roll on a suspended cymbal (or triangle or tambourine, etc.) by some sort of
pedal setup. I often think of this when I'm trying to cover multiple parts
in shows or in the pit. Imagine a volume pedal hooked up to some sort of
egg beater contraption that could move two mallets above and below a cymbal
to crescendo or decrescendo. I know you can do this with pipe organ
technology but I'm looking for a lo-tech solution. Has anybody here ever
been to The House on the Rock in Wisconsin? They have all sorts of
mechanical instruments including 16 giant timpani that are played
mechanically.

Hey there. Anyone there know Bernie Pershie? Anyway, he had a setup that did
exactly this on his rack setup as far back as about 1972. I've worked mixing
FOH for a number of bands that Pernie's played in, and he used both a pedal
operated dual stick highhat, as well as a stick on bass drum pedal for a
vertically mounted floor snare. He used this alot with a band called Brainiac
that had a keyboard bass player, and Bernie would swap out playing key
bass while drumming so that the reg. key's guy could also play guitar.
Needless to say, I kept really busy mixing these guys, and Bernie's drum
tech's were usually on the verge of breakdown nightly as we had to keep these
things running with only parts that we could scrounge on the road.
Anway, just wanted to add this for any historical purposes. But I've also
spent a fair amount of time at the House on the Rocks, and for anyone
that's ever sit in the "Symphony Room", it's both amazing and creepy,
being surrounded by a complete, life size mechanical orchestra. Last
few times I was there in the late 90's, they had to "cheat" on that particular
gizmo due to maintenance cost, and half of the figures were just winging it
to a canned sound track.
