Face it, it's as scientific as anyone needs to get on the topic. I would say, if you can't hear a difference with your ears, then there isn't one (worth being concerned about) - but, of course that all depends on who's listening. If we are only playing for ourselves, and no one else will ever hear, I suppose the ear is all you need. Since many player hear play live or in the studio, the information you've provided gives a solid basis on which to make decisions.
It's not quite as cool as the car pulling the throw off trick though. :-)
Don't forget the repeated dropping of the 40-lb. grinder, and the ensuing physics debate about the strength of the bracket the strap was mounted to vs. the strength of the throwoff vs. the distance the grinder fell vs....
